More than just a role to play
Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 06/10/2017
» Kelly B Jones is pretty well known in Bangkok’s acting circles; in recent years, among many roles, she played the lead in Culture Collective’s play Death of Miss America and was in two feature films by Asylum Films, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and Troy 2, which is due to to come out at the end of October. But Guru, enamoured also by her ability to juggle different roles outside the world of acting, decided to sit down with the talented actress and voice-talent to dig deeper into her quest for making the planet more eco-friendly, one school at a time. Her current position as Director of IPC Green International Preschool and Nursery, Bangkok’s first eco-friendly school, is testament to this journey we all need to start walking, together. Read on to find out more about how Kelly balances her calling for acting with her passion to make the world a greener place.

Nationalism is not the answer to land woes
Oped, Thana Boonlert, Published on 04/11/2022
» Resistance to the controversial foreign land ownership bill is giving rise to the term khai chat -- used to denounce traitors who sell the motherland -- being used in political discourse. Whether a person is a government critic or supporter, he or she believes their ancestors fought very hard to protect our land and it should not be given away to foreigners.

Exceptional Russian ballet stars lift roof off TCC
Life, Published on 06/09/2016
» Mesmerising world class ballet dancing was on display at the Thailand Cultural Centre on Aug 26, when four top-ranking stars from Russia's historic Perm Tchaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theatre shared the stage with home-grown talent in the form of the Bangkok City Ballet Company -- which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. For the record, it is immediately worth stating that the 14 members of BCB -- directed by founder Masako Hirata -- carried themselves most convincingly in the presence of such illustrious visiting artists, who brought with them one-and-a-half-century-old traditions of bravura.

Family in focus
Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 03/02/2023
» The Oscars is coming up soon. And while it should be an exciting time for any film lover, I can't help but feel a bit let down by this year's nominations, especially for the Best Picture category. I didn't particularly like the flashy biopic Elvis and I personally thought Everything Everywhere All At Once was way, way overrated. And I have no clue how Top Gun: Maverick managed to get nominated for best movie of the year. So I had kind of lost interest in this year's awards -- until I recently had a chance to watch another nominee, The Fabelmans, the latest film by Steven Spielberg. Suddenly my interest returned.

Exploring the Russian soul
Life, Published on 01/06/2017
» A thoroughly Russian evening of musical passion was well received by appreciative patrons at the Thailand Cultural Centre on May 21, as the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra once again richly benefited from the inspiring presence of high-flying international talent. Both still young but established in their fields, conductor Yuri Medianik and pianist Andrey Gugnin performed with such phenomenal bravura that this event will be remembered as a standout concert in this year's Bangkok calendar.

The morning after your major acquisition …
Business, PwC Thailand, Published on 24/04/2017
» Yesterday was one of the key highlights in your career as you closed the biggest acquisition in your company's history. The acquired business is only slightly larger than your company by revenue, but has 20% fewer employees. The market anticipates that the new enlarged group will grow by more than 150% from product extensions, cross-selling, and the key talent in the management team at the acquired entity.

'Golden Gays' return to the stage
Sunday Spotlight, Published on 22/01/2023
» On weekdays in Manila, Philippines, Al Enriquez, 86, pushes a rickety wooden cart with a rainbow umbrella perched on the dilapidated wood. He sells candies and cigarettes outside of a bustling commuter supermarket, where the occasional smoker or a child with a few coins stops by to make a purchase.

Celebration of tradition
Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 20/01/2023
» Veteran filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda became known after winning the Palme d'Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for the crime drama Shoplifters despite having directed films and TV series for nearly three decades. Renowned for his gentle sense of pacing, simple yet beautiful cinematography, and a focus on the complexities of family relationships, he showcased his skills in previous works such as After The Storm (2016), Like Father, Like Son (2013) and Nobody Knows (2004). However, the one that has stuck in my mind to this day is Our Little Sister (2015), a female-focused drama that gave us a cosy, heartwarming family story, along with rich cultural and beautiful vistas of the Japanese countryside.

Happy heart
Suwitcha Chaiyong, Published on 25/04/2017
» The talent show The Star has been on the small screen for 12 years, and has proved hugely popular with audiences. However, it’s surprising that in all that time, the programme has only ever had two female winners. One of those, Radubdow Srinawong (Matung) who gained the first place crown in 2015, is also the youngest ever winner. There can be no doubt that she deserved her success, however. She may be small, but her big voice absolutely blew the audience away.
