Happy Expat commented : Dear Chief Selth, You must have a very limited travelling experience. If you had as much as mine you would by now have come to the realisation that ALL immigration staff, wherever they are, are rude. By comparison however I can say that Thai immigration staff do not normally fit into this category. I have found them to be the opposite of what you describe. If you want to experience REAL rudeness try going to any of the following countries:- Australia (Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane), USA (Hawaii or Anchorage take the cake), Russia (Moscow or Vladivostok), China (any point of entry), India, but the one that really takes the cake is Dubai. Been there for the first and last time. Generally the reason is, in my opinion, that these people are drawn from a low level of education and invested with far more authority than they can handle. Add to that the people they deal with inbound are likely to be stressed out after a long flight and are oversensitive to the behaviour directed at them. A mixture guaranteed to create unpleasantness. My advice is don't try to be "nice". Remain stoic, do not try to promote "pleasant" conversation, hand over your passport, remain silent and get on with it. Happy Expat

kokok commented : I do not think anything else should happen. I totally agree with you guys say. Money is definitely the key to open whatever we want in this world. Time and time again we have seen that! In Thailand, in America, in India! The place does not matter. What matters is whether you have money. However I do not think that is not the case with the Middle East (Probably because they are already rich!). I hope he had insurance to pay up for what he has done to those people!

HybridEm commented : to answer the point of this thread...why farangs live in this paradoxical land is the same as why marginalized asians, and latinos and whoever-else choose to live in America and suffer its indifference towards blatant/ institutional racism is because they're willing to tolerate it, and they themselves understand the indifference in life itself; and as Mr. Surin Province pointed out..the problems are just the same in any other country. On a side-note - to think that China, Malaysia, or India are non-racist countries is quite a nice illusion.

[/quote:16cvdlc2] That's an excellent contrast, and the invention of the web-forum really enables us to examine both sides of that same coin from the same terminal, like here. I just did 11 months on a forum mainly populated by ex-pats in Thailand, followed by another 11 months on another forum mainly populated by ex-pats in the USnA, and the ratio of sensible people to whingers was probably not all that different, considering that the ex-pats in Thailand averaged around 30 years older than the ex-pats in the US. Maturity has a way of adding a little more diplomacy to the way people speak about things that bother them, or perhaps angry young men don't live as long as the rest of us? On the whole, maybe all of us have some axe to grind about something that we feel unjust, whether that is because it truly is, or whether we just copped a bad run with something, or whether we simply don't understand the mechanisms behind it? That latter one seems to be the most annoying cause for gripes IMHO, because it's like crying wolf a bit. It's probably quite a normal experience when you first get off the boat in a new place, to not expect to understand everything about a place where you have less understanding than a local kindergarten student. However after a few years as an ex-pat, those sorts of mysteries might be overcome as one learns the reasons they are in place. Still, there will always be problems that we might encounter that cause us to perhaps regress back to those initial perceptions and rant away.

Anonymous commented : Yes, I know of the money tree. There are many growing in Pattaya and in the farang areas of Bangkok. Some are even found in Phuket. But those trees are harvested only once per season (the tourist season). Once harvested and the leaves are gone, the tree will usually never sprout forth money again. To get a new crop, a new tree must grow. Seeds of the money tree are not indigenous to Thailand. The seeds come from such far away places as the UK, America, Sweden, and Germany. Some even come from Russia, but they seed from Russia is usually of poor quality and gives forth little money. Seeds from Pakistan or India are even worse. Usually the seeds come into Thailand by air with November, December and January the prime times for the seeds to enter. The seeds grow and give off money very rapidly with two weeks being the normal period. Some however will begin to give off money within a few days. For you farangs who are looking for seeds of the money tree, forget it. The tree will never be found. However, Thai people, particularly young attractive women have a genetic quality where they can smell the tree very clearly. They can usually smell it from quite some distance and are quite adept at harvesting. For the relatives of Thai women, finding the money tree is much more difficult but it can be found. However it is better to let the woman search for the tree. She has better luck.
