Have your cake and eat it

Guru, Pimchanok Phungbun Na Ayudhya, Published on 27/09/2013

» THE SET-UP: The one-year-old patisserie and salon de the (that's "tea room" in French for the unsophisticated folks out there) has been acclaimed for its exquisite renditions of French pastries. The classy Parisian-inspired tearoom is also a cosy gathering place for regulars and discerning sweet cravers alike.

For plump fruit, Starve the tree

B Magazine, Normita Thongtham, Published on 29/09/2013

» Five years ago I planted a Moringa oleifera tree, known in Thai as marum, on one side of my house. It began flowering when it was about three years old and since then has been flowering heavily most months of the year. Although I have seen insects pollinating the flowers, they never developed into fruit.

Night time is the right time for skin renewal

    Life, Noko, Published on 01/10/2013

» After we turn off the lights at night, the skin doesn't take a rest _ it switches on repair mode to prepare it for a new day. In the same way that facial skin needs separate day and night creams, the eye's contours require two different products _ one for morning application and the other as a bedtime sin eraser.

    Second time around

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 11/10/2013

» The second branch of aLL Six To Twelve follows the original in Lang Suan. It has a strong industrial feel with its bare concrete floor, zinc sheets, wooden beams, and rustic wall decorated with past issues of the Bangkok Post (extra points here). It feels like sitting in a stylish warehouse but also may come across as a bit raw for some. Expect Japanese and western expats as well as office workers here on weekdays.

    In the swim of things

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 30/10/2013

» Motivational speaker Maarten van der Weijden speaks from the heart when he says medicine was the only thing that helped him fight leukaemia and that his winning of a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics, while recuperating from one of the most deadly forms of cancer, could not be attributed to a case of "mind over matter".

    Flavours & fragrances

    Guru, Published on 01/11/2013

» Besides the letter “f”, fragrance and food have more in common than you may think. A really good dish can make you stop in your stride with its look and smell like a good bottle of eau de toilette. The recently opened Perfume tries just this — to fuse flavours, fragrances and fancy presentation on its plates. Once inside, you can smell mystery and class in the air. There are shelves built around a column to display collections of small liquor bottles and perfumes. Pictures of beautiful and ethereal women are painted on a white wall. The ceiling is high but the room is filled with a scent as if you’ve walked into a spa (or fallen into a big jar of potpourri). If that doesn’t smell good to you, there are seats out front. The overall feel suggests a long dinner for a girl’s night out or a romantic date. The usual crowd consists of Thai ladies with a taste for cocktails, Japanese housewives and expats.

    Rooftop refuge

    Guru, Published on 15/11/2013

» Pratunam is known as a wholesale heaven where you can buy a "mirror" handbag for a fraction of the price of the original. You may be surprised to learn that one fashionable sector of the Bangkok dining scene rooftop restaurants has landed there. Chili Hip and Walk are located next to each other on top of Centara Watergate Pavillion Hotel Bangkok. Chili Hip serves as a restaurant with intrigue as black and red stand out from the colour palette. Walk serves as a bar and offers a minimalist feel with a playful edge of hypnotic hues from tables with LED lights inside. Although not too high, the view of many buildings reaching for the sky is still impressive. The breeze is so ample it could dry drops of drinks you spill on your shirt. Most of the patrons are hotel guests from Singapore or Hong Kong along with some walk-in tourists.
