    The Value of a Tourist.

By Sean Moran, Created on: 18/01/2009, Last updated on: 15/12/2010

» What are some of the most common positive and negative results of foreign tourists from overseas visiting Thailand? Thai opinions welcome, kap.

    • dutchboy commented : for Bicycle Tours lead their foreign customers. Before the "Reds" actions they passed there virtually every day with groups of 8-15 tourists. After the "Reds" that went down to 2-3 times per week, and usually 2-4 tourists in a group. The guides did not look happy. Now, after about 6 months, the groups are getting bigger again, the frequency gets higher, and the guides are starting to smile again, because....... $$$$ Now are all tourists good? No, course not, but that is not a Thailand problem, it is a world wide problem. Look at the havoc that Western European (British, Dutch, German etc) are causing in tourist centers in Spain and Greece. Difference with Thailand is that they are coping with it. Here they are just complaining that tourists are so bad. Sex-tourism? Yes, so what. Granted, I come from a very progressive country when it comes to these kind of things (first to legalise marihuana, abortion, same sex marriage, etc), in my home country Prostitution is now an accepted for of work. A majority of the prostitutes is organised, get social benefits, etc. And yes, we are happy that foreign tourist come to Amsterdam, and spent their money there. So why not in Thailand?

    • triptrip commented : ear Thailand has such law, we foreigner better respect it whether we like or not else.......well, let's have a cold beer like someone previously mentioned, this guy could be a scapegoat, a sort of sacrificial lamb to send a message to the foreign communities in Thailand, DO NOT MESS WITH US. maybe....who knows.

    • airport_worker commented : ases" instruction. From foreign press we can discover foreigners who were pardoned (or never proceeded to trial such as Lech Tomasz Kisielewicz in 1995). But associated press et all, rarely mention Thai people accused of LM. That's why I asked if anyone has some figures on the results - all I can see is Lech from 1995 (apologised and was released), Oliver Jufer 2007 (pardoned and deported), and Harry 2008 (pardoned, deported). Thai cases in the last few years? (ones that have proceeded further than just the accusations please ) EDIT Additional.... Bad of me - I forgot Sulak Sivaraksa accused twice and acquitted in the 1980's and 90's Giles Ji Ungpakorn - well, accused, and has departed, but no result from a court

    • Voice commented : ibution. The difficulty for foreigners to gains Thai citizenship is because most of the elites supported by the establishment think that if one foreigner could become Thai citizen there will be more. If we have more foreign holding Thai citizenship our country would end up own by foreigners and that isn’t what they wants. Why are there more poor people than rich in Thailand? Why are there class divide or a large gap between rich & poor? Because it would give the elites & establishment opportunity to own & control. The rich can do what ever they wants while the poor are make to dependency hand to mouth on the daily basis. I am quite sure that most ordinary & rural Thai don’t mind foreigners. I think they are more positive thinking coming from rural Thai than those elites & establishment. People voice is always the most powerful thing in the world. For this reason the elites & establishment wanted to enforce the LM law to keep people at bay. Thing are make or unmake through people voice. The reason we has experience the political unrest in Thailand because they are worried that rural people started to have a single voice and that is Democracy, which it wasn’t like what used to be when it comes to voting time.. More people now are better educated than before and there will be more. If they can divide people voice then they could hold on to their power. Unity we must! to win our Democracy and the freedom we deserves. Like Chaiyo-Thailand said Profiler we are at the beginning stage but my question is who is going to leads them to the following stage? They sure needs a good leader to lead them there. Thaksin isn’t the perfect answer nor Ahbisit, so where are these able people of Thailand. People who’s could give majority voice back to our people. If PAD minority voice could over thrown the government who has majority voice something must be very wrong isn’t it? We must have our unity to win our voice of power back so untity means power. UNITY UNITY we must! [/b:3085pdr3]

UNITY UNITY we must! [/b:ldqu0250][/quote:ldqu0250] Hi Voice Welcome back to the forum. Coming to the point, what you've mentioned is so true, but you know very well, our country's, Pu Yai, do not want democracy, but are reluctantly willing, that's because of the protests, violence and foreign pressure, to allow us to flirt with it. True democracy means, many laws will have to be re-written, deleted or new laws introduced, and that's not in their favour. They want both power and money, and they enjoy employing the poor, to look up to them and serve like slaves. You see what happened to PAD leader, Sonthi, for trying to promote democracy. There're many Thais, like us, who are willing to risk their lives to bring true democracy to our mother land but we're also obligated to our families and their wishes. How many of us (excluding their families) really remember those martyrs in 1973? I confess, I seldom and may they forgive me.

» Not only do ex prime ministers live in exile but any wealthy Thai can buy what they like in Uk. I dont know about other countries but I suspect the same. Not only can a Thai buy a house to live in, but hotels and even football teams of national importance. A six month visa is the smallest...

    • twk commented : ere there is a large group of foreign and mixed marriages in Thailand the economy is substancially better than in areas where they are not located. We do not take and take. I would be happy to employ and pay a better than local wage to the area Thai citizens. You need to do more research on what you opinionate. I am here because I have been teaching and working overseas for 31 years. I by experience find my life style and standard of living are better suited for me here. I do not seek wealth or riches. I do seek the meager comforts, respect, and courtisy (sp) that all deserve. We (Americans) are a country that for centuries have offered all that wish to succeed an opportunity to find their dream not deny it. It has created a great country and economy that changed the world. As you can see it can have an adverse effect on the world at times but it is a country made of immigrants from the world. I am a decendant of French. The only true American is the Native American Indian. So just remember, we are immigrants seeking the same rights as we give to others. Even the American Thai are in the same boat as us on these matters.

    • FredKubasa commented : quirements on Thai ex pats in foreign countries. The 12, ( twelve) Thai restaurants, in the tiny town of Madison Wisconsin, US, should be closed, possessions seized and owners deported for a start & we all, have similar situations in our home countries so, abandon talk and act ! I've copied this to my US rep. !
