    Curbing govt internet surveillance

    Oped, Published on 24/10/2023

» Government efforts to access private communications are nothing new. In decades past, such attempts at prying were often justified on national-security grounds. Today, however, policymakers point to child safety and disinformation as reasons to limit privacy protections. Established democracies are often leading this charge, inadvertently paving the way for the world's autocrats.

Boost teen mums' pride, forget the pity

    Oped, Published on 22/03/2023

» The raw deal, the sexual chagrin. In this week's case, a daughter was molested by a father who even recorded the sexual abuse on his own mobile phone. Yet the news that captured society and media attention was that of a 17-year-old mother named "Nim" -- not her real name, who claimed that her 8-month-old son was kidnapped in Nakhon Pathom province. She subsequently changed her story and told police she accidentally dropped the child, and he died from injuries sustained in the fall.

Life, Suwitcha Chaiyong, Published on 06/03/2023

» News from Nakhon Pathom in February about an eight-month-old baby, Nong Tor, who was kidnapped while his parents slept, drew the public's attention for weeks. By the end of February, the infant's 17-year-old mother, N*, confessed to police that while bathing Nong Tor she accidentally dropped him, causing him to have infantile spasms. The teenage mother did not know what to do. She later dumped the baby's body in the river. Despite an extensive search of the river by police, rescue officers and volunteers, the body of Nong Tor has not been found. N faces three charges -- causing death by negligence, concealing a corpse and reporting false information to authorities.

This broader coverage, encompassing not only the parents and children but also grandparents and other dependants, has offered a social safety net to support family members. Yet, that extended unit has now been disintegrating for some time, compounded by the stress due to Covid-19. What then are the areas needing more attention to tackle the changing scenario?

» In April, the beloved Nigerian gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu died at the hands of her husband. Accounts from relatives and friends indicate that, despite enduring severe abuse, she had stayed in her marriage because she hoped things would get better. And Nwachukwu's situation was hardly unique. Earlier this month, the Kenyan actor Idah Alisha opened up about the violence she suffered before she divorced her husband, a youth pastor.

South Korea's gender politics getting ugly

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 10/03/2022

» Gender is not the only issue in this week's election in South Korea, but it's the hot-button topic. It's not clear if there was ever a successful sexual revolution in the country, but the counter-revolution is definitely doing well. The 'F-word' (feminism) is being used a lot by both major parties, and not in a good way.

Gender bias a root cause of recidivist abuse

Oped, Thana Boonlert, Published on 04/03/2022

» 'If I were to come across him, I would ask whether he knows what I'm going through," said a woman in her 30s. How hard is it to carry a sense of helplessness for years? How difficult is it to build a new relationship after your trust has been broken? Can the attacker understand such feelings? I know the victim would rather not ask these questions than let her struggle out.
