When textbooks get it oh-so-wrong

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 26/05/2017

» Textbooks are meant to inform learners of facts -- not alternative forms of fiction -- on a particular subject. They also provide students with information on things relevant to them, helping them to navigate their lives and make sense of the world.

    The girl behind the paintings

Guru, Narada Sai-ngam, Published on 26/05/2017

» Even though it's located on the edge of Bangkok, we made sure we were there at the opening of Anchalee "Ja" Arayapongpanit's art exhibition at ARDEL Gallery of Modern Art. This is her third solo show and it's named "Thriller and Horror". Her artworks are distinctive through their strong portrayal of women, essentially big-eyed cartoon versions of the artist herself. This time round, Ja put herself inside her favourite movie scenes from thriller and horror genres. The shy artist talked to us about the messages behind her paintings which are on display at ARDEL Gallery of Modern Art (goo.gl/iQDoq8) until June 25. Some of them have already been sold.

    Salty, sweet and zesty

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 26/05/2017

» The setting: Walking into the Bangkok Trading Post Bistro & Deli almost seems like walking into a whole different world entirely. Coming from your typical Bangkok soi, you walk into what seems like a small doorway, only to find it opens up to a room with a high ceiling and walls made of teak. The furnishings are unique since they've all been custom-made for the restaurant and all around there are decorations that invoke feelings of travel and exploration, making it seem as if you're simply a sojourner taking a break from your weary journey. This is a feel the restaurant was obviously going for and succeeded in doing. The marble tables give you a feel of grandeur and something we were pleasantly surprised with was the fact that the tables had hooks underneath to hang your bags and purses! The ambiance and atmosphere is very laid-back and relaxing and they've actually got an outdoor garden that you can check out -- once Bangkok's weather figures itself out, that is. We haven't even talked about the food yet and we're already tempted to go back.

    Who's the baddest?

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 26/05/2017

» It's terribly easy to get a burger in Bangkok. And since it's so common, let's be honest and all admit that we can easily take this for granted. We might even say we get bored of it sometimes (please don't stone us for spouting heresies). But Bad Burger Bangkok is here to change all that. With a menu that's especially crafted by Poupée, the owner and chef who cooks with passion and a vengeance (that's a whole different story), Bad Burger Bangkok is set to dominate and become the baddest burger joint the Big Mango has ever seen.

    Budget Rethink?

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/04/2017

» Our dear cabinet recently approved a budget to buy 10 made-in-China tanks worth two billion baht while key members also seem keen on a plan proposed by the Royal Thai Navy to buy three submarines worth 36 billion baht. While I'm sure these dear sirs exercised their sound rationale before agreeing to such big purchases for the sake of Thailand's security, IMHO, with utmost respect, I would like to point out that there are other more beneficial ways the money could be used too.

    Music has a new voice

Guru, Narada Sai-ngam, Published on 21/04/2017

» Electronic duo X0809 (X-O-Eight-O-Nine) has pushed many boundaries in the Thai music scene in a way that we rarely see. Note Panayanggool, best known for being first runner-up in the seventh season of The Star and Anya "Yale" Muangkote first met at Chula due to a shared interest in music and sports, before eventually forming X0809. The dynamic duo produces their own music with unconventional style and visuals, having released English-language singles like the dark and hypnotic -30 and the more catchy HO. The colourful music video of the latter, the duo's latest single, has amassed over one million views on the band's Facebook page alone within one month. Their fresh sound has reached both Thai and international audiences and they have represented Thailand at various music festivals. We had a fun chat with the duo ahead of their upcoming EP, X. Check them out at fb.com/x0809.

» Who doesn't love pizza? It's one of the most delightful comfort foods out there and a slice never fails to put a smile on your face. But pizza seems to be heavily commercialised now and what's difficult nowadays is finding a pizza that's unique. You could go get the usual ones that you order or perhaps you could go for the slightly pricier ones in one of those fancy restaurants. Thankfully, Pezzo is offering us something that falls in the middle of the two.

    Sushi goodness

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 21/04/2017

» The Setting: Only a month old, Masu may seem like a typical hole in the wall resto. About a minute or two walk inside of Sukhumvit soi 39, the restaurant's small space may lead you to underestimate it. We certainly did. But never judge a restaurant by its size, because if there's one thing we can certainly say about this new, small sushi place, it's that it delivers.

    A Bangkokian trading card game

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 21/04/2017

» Before the days of Pokemon Go (have you forgotten that was a thing?), there were the numerous Gameboy games and then there was the Pokemon trading card game. It was basically a simpler version of Magic: The Gathering without the complexity and the commitment. Being the nerds that we are, we here at Guru have decided to create Bangkok's very own trading card game, complete with characters, spells, and items that are exclusively Bangkokian.
