Imaginary city

Life, Thana Boonlert, Published on 12/04/2023

» A shabby man wanders, scavenging for whatever he can find from a pile of rubbish. Still, he shares leftover food with a stray cat, caressing the creature with a warm smile, the only positive expression on his nondescript face, in a capital city that betrays no sign of any human existence.

» The recent death of the gifted Jamaican-American singer Harry Belafonte at the age of 96 inevitably sparked memories of when his biggest hit "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" swept the globe, including Britain.

A funny stranger in her own home

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/07/2017

» Unpleasant experiences can be a source for comedy. That seems to be the case for Simiran "Simi" Srinarula, a 20-year old student studying Media & Communications at Macquarie University in Sydney. Simi combines her experience as a Thai-Indian and her wittiness into funny skits. Her Facebook and YouTube handle Kaek Kee Kui (fb.com/kaekkeekui) — which unofficially translates to talkative Thai Indians — is where you can find some funny sketches that she has done all by herself. Simi manages to poke fun at things she has experienced in Thai society as a Thai of Indian descent, while slipping in an important message here and there. One video where she made fun of questions that she got asked as a Thai-Indian recently went viral and earned her some media attention. There is some strong language in her videos but we think they are funny and definitely worth checking out.

    Harry shows Bangkok some Styles

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 14/03/2023

» The accessory du jour was the fluffy pink boa. The colour scheme was hot pink -- pink pants, pink boots, pink cowboy hats, pink eyeshadow, pink hijabs. Or if not pink, then anything in the tooth-aching shades of the rainbow. It was a lively, joyous sight on Saturday night, a show of hot-hue aesthetics in a defiant contrast to the brutalist concrete skeleton of Rajamangala Stadium. How I wish concrete-mad Bangkok could look like this every day!

» Finally, the return to democracy has begun. It's raw. It's vulgar. It's controversial. It has also unleashed a rush of polarised opinions. Police are gunning to outlaw it as more people flock to view it online, with over 21 million on YouTube for the music video in question as of yesterday mid-afternoon.

Fusing a funky street style and catchy beats of today with classic tap techniques, it's not just swing music that she taps into: Lady Gaga's Bad Romance and Star Wars theme songs are among her playlist. The tap awakens, indeed.

    Junta fuels rap views

    News, Postbag, Published on 29/10/2018

» The rap song Prathet Ku Mee by Rap Against Dictatorship has gone viral (BP, Oct 27). It was spurred on with publicity it could only dream of thanks to the adverse reaction to it by the junta and our ever-busy police force. Of course I have not looked at the video on YouTube as I don't wish to get into trouble, but I'm told it is a corny imitation of African-American rap stars, complete with compulsory obscenities and gang-related hand waving.
