    Maneaters

Learningpost, David Canavan, Published on 01/06/2010

» There are places we can go on this planet where we are not the dominant species or top predator, places where only brave men dare to venture and places where humans actually, and actively, get preyed upon. To be eaten alive, I think, would be the worst way to die, yet it happens to people every year, eaten alive by a few select animals. Let me introduce you to the maneaters.

» One of the first things I become expert at whenever I visit the United States is its television. I have no choice in the matter. Over here in the States I'm awake when I'm asleep in Bangkok, and jetlag thus hits me like a Northeastern truck driver on methamphetamines.

We've come a long way, baby - or not

Database, Gotfried. K, Published on 12/05/2010

» The protests on the streets of Bangkok these days are a reminder that, taken as a whole, mankind has come a long way in the past hundred years - yet not everyone has been able to enjoy the trip, nor have all benefited from the enormous sacrifices required for industrialisation and participation in the modern world. It has increasingly become a world of haves and have-nots and the disparity has been fuelled, in large part, by science and technology.

» These blasted machines are out to get us. But so are some of the programmers, and I don’t mean the hackers, either. Some of the most insidious attacks on our computers come from companies which claim to be responsible, don’t do any evil, etc.

Disk contents and some OS X users' pitfalls

» For those new to OS X and Macs, the experience may be like walking into a dimly lit room. You can make out shapes of important furniture, but you may walk into smaller items. As the eyes adjust to the light, working becomes easier, and when the sun rises, the first rays make everything much clearer.

    Back to the future

» Don't panic, announced Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, but in the next 60 days the government will "create a level playing field" for telecom companies and probably try to extract truckloads of money and turn back the clock on concessions granted by the state duopoly; Mr Abhisit continued to maintain that telecoms firms (translation: one telecoms firm) made money from changes during the Thaksin Shinawatra years; he said he wants to "unwind the concessions," go back to the future and probably send a huge bill to Advanced Info Service of Shingapore; Mr Abhisit said he envisioned one big concession contract covering all telecoms firms and saving the bacon of your slowly dying ToT and CAT Telecom. Wichian Mektrakarn, CEO of No 1 yuppiephone firm Advanced Info Service of Shingapore, explained that if Mr Abhisit succeeds in unravelling all concessions contracts and reverting to the early 1990s when they started to come into being, "the whole system will collapse." Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij seemed to contradict the prime minister; he told Hong Kong businessmen it is "unlikely" the government will try to extract retroactive concessions payments.

Jacobs was known as the friendly face of Open source in Oracle. When Oracle did not assign MySQL to Jacobs, he quit.
