    British Embassy in Bangkok

By Anonymous, Created on: 05/10/2004, Last updated on: 25/02/2011

» In March, my Thai partner wanted to visit me in London. Before granting a visa, the Embassy wanted a mountain of paperwork including proof of my income, whether or not I woned my own home and a whole lot of other things. At this stage, I have to say that we have many controversial issues in the UK...

They were using an agency for their application....and were no doubt accepted, whereas our (in my eyes) more genuine application was flatly refused.we are now considering using an agancy too "i garantee she goes 100 %!! i garantee she goes 100%!!" as the lady at the agancy said. What do you have to do????????????????

    • Anonymous commented : Boy! This subject sure got you guys going. Well, I am in the same boat and can pretty much confirm all your worst fears. There is corruption in the Bangkok Embassy ( I only wish I knew the system before I made a legal application) and there are all sorts of ways to bring your Thai partners in (via the back door). The chinese do it nicely by applying to a country that is a little less stringent, say Belgium or Eire and then once settled make the E.U. hop into the U.K. My original post, " Ways and means of entry into U.K. for Thai nationals" explains my situation with just as much response and support as you see here. My Thai wife is still in Thailand, she's a university graduate in business and I have the support of my MP and enquiriesmade on my behalf by David Treisman, The Lord Treisman of Tottenham. Even a Lord cannot swing it for me. I cannot get an interview with David Fall, the Ambassador in Bangkok, even though it is my right. By god I want to complain! What I would like to know is, is anyone of any worth reading this, anyone who can make a difference, anyone with some sort of power to make change? If not, we are all lost causes and things will continue as they are. As for the BangkokEmbassy staff, they are all very rude, over officious, faceless beaurocrats who really don't give a damn about you or I, let alone some foreign spouse or partner. They are omnipotent in respect of who they grant a visa to. An appeal, I hear you cry! After six months Bangkok have finally released our application papers to the U.K. so we can now expect an appeal date for some one or two years hence, (due to the backlog of asylum seekers I am reliably informed). When the civil uprising begins, someone give me a shout beacuase I hold this country in the lowest of esteems... Good Luck all!

    • Anonymous commented : Hi all I'm a Thai woman wanting to share my bad experience with the ECO in Bangkok just yesterday (22Feb)....I'm working in BKK as a tour guide, my boyfriend is English and we are in same age (31) been together for 2 years. I joined him in England ,after he had to return home, with a visitor visa in 2004 then again in 2005...I had no problem in granting this visa as I have travelled to EU and US before. Anyways, this time is different, we decided to try to live in England together so that I applied for a Settlement Visa as the unmarried partner which have been together for 2 years. I came to the visa section yesterday 1 pm and was called for a short interview at 4.15 pm. ...I came in the interview room seeing a British lady and a Thai gentleman.....he asked what language I prefer to use I said either Thai or English, he suggested that Thai should be most clear, and I agreed with him............she started the question.... with his translation....I answered in Thai.....when it came to the question what is my boyfriend doing ...I told them the name of company he is working for which is in England.....she asked if he's in England how could you live together?........I answered in Thai that The first year he was in Thailand doing his own business on bra-bra-bra...but ...I stopped for him to translate and he did translated what I said......She stopped typing and said ' then where is his company's documents?' openning my folder very fast and said out loud ' YOU'RE CONFUSING ME, I DONT HAVE ALL DAY FOR THIS !' in the same time throwing my folder on the desk/counter quite hardly....then turned to the Thai gentleman ' I asked WHAT IS HE DOING? it is very clear, WHAT IS HE DO-ING?' with an angry voice. I was shocked by her act which I've never expected to see. I was so scared instead of walking out from the room ...I apologised as if it's my fault......she said that I have to come back again for a full interview not just a short interview coz my case is more complicated and she told me to come back on March,6th.......I came home with disappointment in UK officer the way she treats the applicant......I've made a complaint to ECO Manager today with no expectation to receive any reply but at least I've done what I wanted to. I'm not sure if I want to come back to the UK embassy ever again.....I applied for this visa because of my boyfriend.......I dont care if they would refuse my visa coz I have a good life here in BKK and I have lots of beautiful beaches to enjoy and my boyfriend dont want to be in England anyway. ...I am just sad with the way they treat Thai people. If she had just slowly read my document, she would have found what she was looking for. If she had just listenned carefully, she wouldn't have broken someone's heart. If she had just been a little bit more patient, everything around her would have been more beautiful.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair spoke to Ken Bigley's family in the UK and Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw went to see Ken Bigley's family in the UK to offer condolenses from the government and the Queen sent a letter of condolenses to Ken Bigley's mother. No one on an, official level, has said anything to Ken Bigley's Thai wife, Sombat Bigley !!! I know how I feel about the prospect of my government treating my wife in that same way. My heart goes out to her in her loss and I must admit that I am ashamed of the way my government has ignored her in her loss.

    • Anonymous commented : Hi Rich, They seem to be a law unto themselves. A Member of Parliament has no authority in his own right but his recommendation should not be overridden without an explanation. What really angered me was, after I took the trouble to contact them especially to analyse my partner's application, they refused to see me and suggested I sent an EMail. I did but it was ignored. When they returned our paperwork, I noticed that they retained the letter from my MP. which was curious. But you are right. There is something very fishy going on in the British Embassy in Bangkok. I hope I never need their help.

    • Anonymous commented : My girlfriend is a Thai university student and I am a Brit living in Bangkok. I have taken her to the UK twice on tourist visas and once each to Spain and the US. (The US embassy gave her a 10 year tourist visa.) She is not from a wealthy family and doesn't have a lot of assets but did have the minimum B200k in a bank account deposited over a period of time before the first application. The US embassy didn't even look at her bank book. I read all the various embassy requirements very carefully before each application and provided detailed documentation on both of our backgrounds as well as invitations from hosts with copies of their passports and evidence of their addresses. I attended all the interviews with her. On each occasion she was given the visa immediately after brief interviews to confirm some of the details in the documentation. I have no complaints at all except that the American Embassy is very hot and queues there are long and that the Spanish Embassy requires notarised documents from a host which cost me 200 euros. The British Embassy came out absolute tops in terms of efficiency and courtesy for my money. I also have nothing but praise for the consular section. If you look at British Embassy web site you will see that they are looking for a company to outsource some of the visa work to. I hope they can maintain the same standards.

    • Anonymous commented : I think you will find there are a lot of agencies in Bangkok providing this sort of advice - though, as far as I know, they usually don't front up at the embassy. Anyhow - they're not allowed to attend interviews. These have to be one-on-one for a settlement visa. I.e. one applicant and an Embassy official. I.e. spouses are separated for separate interviews.

    • Anonymous commented : Hi Zemran and rooster. I have heard other stories about the British Embassy in Bangkok whichleave a nasty taste in the mouth. Seven years ago, there were rumours going around the Khao San Road that British visas could be obtained at the embassy by way of corrupt officials. This story was resurrected two years later in a television programme aired on BBC 2 about the trafficking of Thai women to the UK and once more the accusation was made that UK visas were being made readily available to traffickers. The women were traced to a massage parlour in London's East End where they had been forced into prostitution and regularly beaten by Eastern European pimps. The girls were subsequently rescued, repatriated and returned to their villages. However, to get back to my original post, a month after my partner's application was refused, I returned to Thailand and called the embassy requesting an interview so that we could go through the application, I could convince them that this was a genuine application and seek their guidance on how to make a successful application in the future. They refused to see me. I understand that that after the TV programme was shown, enquiries were made as to what had been happening at the embassy but when I checked, I was informed that nobody had lost their jobs or had been reprimanded. At times like this, I feel ashamed to be British.

    • Anonymous commented : Rad, you can consider Phuket as an international city with international schools and univerisities. The provinces surrounding Phuket are also very exceptional. I think Phuket will be a nicer place after the reconstruction. Thai government will start to enforce and regulate new city plannings and codes. There are both private and public hospitals on Phuket and the surrounding provinces. Krabi has sizeable retirement communities. If you like sea foods and the sea, I would recommend any provinces south of Bangkok Metroplex starting from Phetchaburi to Songkhla.
