    Editorial, Published on 07/01/2024

» As we approach National Children's Day this coming Saturday, we cannot ignore the alarming reality of violence in schools that continues unabated due to systemic impunity and the authoritarian school culture.

Life, Punsita Ritthikarn, Published on 14/03/2022

» For many years, girls and women across the world come together and celebrate International Women's Day (IWD) to promote gender equality and increase the visibility of their social, economic and political achievements. This year, the IWD community would like to advocate for women's equal rights and collectively forge a world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination, where positive difference is valued and recognised.

Gender bias a root cause of recidivist abuse

Oped, Thana Boonlert, Published on 04/03/2022

» 'If I were to come across him, I would ask whether he knows what I'm going through," said a woman in her 30s. How hard is it to carry a sense of helplessness for years? How difficult is it to build a new relationship after your trust has been broken? Can the attacker understand such feelings? I know the victim would rather not ask these questions than let her struggle out.

» If you want to understand why dictatorship persists in Thailand, or the reason why the culture of bullying and impunity is so deep-rooted here, what happened at a public school in Si Sa Ket earlier this month offers an answer.

    The good old days

News, Alan Dawson, Published on 09/09/2018

» If you've ever said in support of the coup regime that, yes, it's great that junta and government are dedicated to returning Thailand to those good old days, then you'll be forever grateful to the national police chief and the whole bunch of the unreformed Royal Thai Police.

Phangnga gang rape case rattles nation

News, Anucha Charoenpo, Published on 10/09/2017

» The general public was shocked to learn of a horrific crime this week -- the gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in Phangnga's Takua Thung district last year. Their initial shock was perhaps only amplified when they found out that at least 40 men from the village of Ban Koh Raet in tambon Lo-yung were facing accusations of their involvement in several episodes of rape.

It's really best when you say nothing at all

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 20/09/2014

» Dear diary, it is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt, as Mark Twain said. How charming my mouth has been in the past week. If it had been Yingluck Shinawatra saying those things, I'm sure a riot would've broken out and the sound of a million whistles would've shattered your eardrums. But it's me, so it's different. It's not the action but the man. How could those pettifogging critics interpret my speech as avuncular nonsense, when in fact they're pieces of wisdom worthy of being chronicled in the national archives and inscribed onto monuments?

    Rotherham is here

    News, Published on 01/09/2014

» The news from England last week was almost entirely depressing, thanks to a report on the state of the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham. It is a colourless, working-class town in the country's northern region, in size and location roughly comparable to Thailand's town of Khon Kaen. In Rotherham, for the past 16 years, men and gangs groomed, raped, beat and actually trafficked young girls. They were aided, indeed encouraged, by police and social workers.
