» The release of convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra from detention will present a dilemma for the Pheu Thai-led government. » The troubling response of the army commander to a rather benign political campaign promise has quickly escalated. Gen Apirat Kongsompong didn't just try to refute the call to cut both the military budget and the number of general officers. He retaliated by reviving the most hateful song in Thai political history, and promised to flood military bases and the airwaves with it. » The government and security teams involved in last week's arrest of suspects in the PVC pipe-bomb attacks deserve much praise. Initial reports indicate that a man with an anti-military obsession was planting the devices around Bangkok for at least two years, and possibly 10. The accused bomber was tracked and found through patient detective work. It is gratifying to learn that security teams were able to find this needle in a haystack and, hopefully, make the capital safer.

» The name of the National Reform Steering Assembly's (NRSA) media bill runs against its real purposes. Branded as the "protection and promotion of media rights, freedom, ethics and professional standard law", the contents of the bill have nothing to do with the title in their intrusive and abusive nature against freedom of speech.

» Too many cooks spoil the broth. It is the reason Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam stepped in to instruct various parties, with the exception of the National Anti-Corruption Commission, to stop seeking information about the Rolls-Royce bribery scandal from the United Kingdom's Serious Fraud Office (SFO).

» As the summer temperatures soar in Thailand, so does the political mercury. The tension seems unavoidable as Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha resorts to harsh reaction to critics who have opposed the draft charter, written by the Meechai Ruchupan-led Charter Drafting Committee.
