The fall of SVB: Another predictable bank failure

Oped, Published on 17/03/2023

» The run on Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) -- on which nearly half of all venture-backed tech start-ups in the United States depend -- is in part a rerun of a familiar story, but it's more than that. Once again, economic policy and financial regulation have proven inadequate.

Tax havens are fuelling autocracy

Oped, Published on 23/02/2023

» People have been trying to dodge paying taxes since time immemorial, but globalisation has turned tax avoidance and evasion, as well as money laundering, into a lucrative business model. What to expect with India helming G20

Oped, Published on 05/01/2023

» India inherited the Group of Twenty (G20) presidency from Indonesia on Dec 1 2022 and will convene the 18th G20 summit on Sept 9-10, 2023 in New Delhi. Coincidentally, India assumes the presidency of the UN Security Council and will chair the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the world's largest regional forum, until September 2023. In May 2022, the Economist ran a cover story about India where it concluded that the country is now an outstanding economic reformer. In November 2022, multinational investment management and financial services company Morgan Stanley predicted that India's economy would account for one-fifth of global growth over the next decade. Suddenly, it feels like India's moment has come to bring its statesmanship and craft a global agenda for economic transformation.

Oped, Jeffrey Frankel, Published on 08/12/2022

» Perhaps the most important task confronting the international order is the enforcement of national limits on greenhouse-gas emissions, such as those that were negotiated in the 2015 Paris agreement. Carbon border adjustments could give these limits teeth, but fair application requires a revived World Trade Organization.

Global accord not necessary in climate battle

Oped, Published on 12/11/2022

» This week's United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Egypt highlights the growing consensus that multilateral cooperation is necessary to avert environmental catastrophe. But with geopolitical tensions spiking and the US-China rivalry heating up, such efforts seem doomed to fail, much like previous efforts to promote global coordination on vaccines, trade, technological innovation, and macroeconomic policy.

Time to leverage big data for the public good

News, Published on 02/11/2022

» The digital age has taught businesses to see people as individuals rather than just as members of certain demographic cohorts. On social media, we receive personalised ads based on our responses to previous ads, our current location, and our shopping habits. Our massive digital footprint enables companies to know precisely how effective their advertising campaigns are at the individual level and to derive immense value from this knowledge.
