It's always 'bath' time in Thailand

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 07/03/2021

» Flying in to a very quiet Suvarnabhumi recently I noticed the official ticket for the airport taxi still informs us of an additional "50 bath" (sic) you will be required to pay the driver at the end of the journey. The "bath" has been there since the ticket was introduced six years ago, so you can forgive what few tourists there are these days for believing they will be dealing in "baths" during their stay.

Bowie a Starman in the Bangkok moonlight

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 17/01/2016

» Thirty-two years ago, on a cool night in early December, I was with a group of friends standing on the field at Bangkok’s Army Stadium. Only a few weeks earlier I had played football at the stadium, but I didn’t have my boots on this time — we had gathered at this rather unlikely location on the Vibhavadi Rangsit highway to witness David Bowie in concert.

There have probably been better years

Oped, Roger Crutchley, Published on 27/12/2015

» Well, we've just about scraped through 2015, although there have been a few dicey moments. Most of us will be happy to see the back of the Year of the Sheep, or was it the Goat? I never did quite work that out. It is customary at this time to look back on the past 12 months, although there are some events you might prefer to forget. If nothing else it serves as a reminder that Thailand will always be Truly Amazing.

When the price isn’t quite right

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 26/04/2015

» If anything is going to upset visitors to Thailand, it is the double-standard pricing at tourist spots. It is a system that is not easy to defend and prompts many lively letters to our PostBag section from irate foreigners. However, one suspects things are unlikely to change.

A new look, but did anybody tell the cabbies?

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 11/01/2015

» Returning to Suvarnabhumi airport from the Northeast last Sunday, I decided to try out the new-look taxi system with the impressive-sounding “automatic queue-card kiosks”, rather than my normal practice of sneaking up to the fourth floor and grabbing a taxi from outside the departure lounge.

Taxis' long, winding road

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 09/09/2012

» In an attempt to resolve the problem of Bangkok taxi drivers who refuse to take passengers, the authorities have announced there will be 1,000 baht fines for uncooperative cabbies. All the passenger has to do if a driver refuses to go anywhere is to remember the licence plate number, the colours of the taxi and the driver's appearance or take a photo or record a video clip.
