Half of them desperately need an operation in order to survive or lead a normal life, but many of them cannot afford the treatment. Even those who somehow manage to find enough money to foot the bills must go through a long wait since the facilities and specialised doctors have limited ability. While many are waiting for their turn to receive treatment, more babies are born with life-threatening conditions.

» It is amazing how many “challenges” I have seen on my Facebook feed over the past month, starting with the Ice Bucket Challenge, which was taken up by hundreds of people in my social circle. Next came other, less serious challenges, like the “10 Books That Stay With You Challenge”, which means you have to list 10 books that stuck with you, but for which you end up listing books that make you sound smart. There's also the “ID Card Photo Challenge”, which asks you to post a horrifying ID card photo of yourself, for an unexplained reason.

» Back in the 80s, when beauty pageants were still a rarity that took place only once or twice a year in Thailand, the Miss Thailand beauty pageant was almost a national celebration, with people nationwide eagerly anticipating who would be crowned the most beautiful woman of the year. Thailand’s entrant in the 1988 Miss Universe contest, Porntip Nakhirunkanok, only 19 years old at the time, did not disappoint. Towering over other Thai women at 173cm tall, with her dazzling smile, sharp features and heartwarming charms, she definitely fit the Miss Universe title.
