» An unexpected outcome of the coronavirus is that around the world wildlife is taking advantage of empty towns and visiting the deserted streets. One such example is in Llandudno, a resort town on the Irish Sea in northern Wales. During the past week spotted strolling around the town centre was a herd of Kashmir (Cashmere) Goats, which have been enjoying themselves dining on the town's tasty hedgerows.

» In these critical times, it is essential that all financial institutions, such as banks, finance companies, and pawn shops, freeze all loans, covering both principal and interest, covering at least personal loans and those to SMEs, until the pandemic is declared over -- plus three months -- because millions of Thais live hand to mouth.

» The most effective and cheapest way of controlling the Covid-19 pandemic will be to conduct mass testing of the population, as urged by eminent French infectious diseases expert Dr Didier Raoult. He has pointed out that cheaply mass produced testing equipment is already available and is being used effectively in South Korea. Countries, including Thailand, should build up this mass testing capability as fast as it can and test as many people as possible. That way it will be possible to isolate only those who test positive and it also makes it possible to treat those who start showing symptoms early which boosts the chance of a favourable outcome for them. This will be far more effective than locking down entire populations of people who are not infected and causing a massive economic dislocation in the process. In Thailand's case, it may cost US$325 million (10.5 billion baht) to test the entire population, but that would be a drop in the bucket compared to the $8 billion cost of a 5% decline in GDP.

» Covid-19 has already claimed its biggest victim in Thailand -- the government itself. Since the outbreak began 10 weeks ago, the Prayut Chan-o-cha government has displayed varying degrees of complacency and incompetence. Worse still, the prime minister seems to lack the understanding that in times of crisis, the country needs a clear direction.

» Two major issues that dominate the front-page news and our attention daily are the outbreak of Covid-19 and the deterioration of the political situation. Somehow both matters share something in common.

» I find those letters that try to evoke the fear of communism very depressing. It's sad that some people seem to have forgotten that the last time this fearmongering prevailed, the US and its allies spent trillions of dollars, killed millions of Asians and alienated a good part of the world including many of their own citizens.

» Re: "PM 'understands' students, warns them against bias", (BP, Feb 27). Like me, I suspect that the patriotic Thai students protesting for a better future for their nation did a double take when the PM piously intoned that "The most important thing is the law".
