A full third is either a post 1965 immigrant or descendant of a post 1965 immigrant. Who exactly is responsible for what?[/quote:y3dawm23] When exactly was it truly America? Prior to Westerner's encroaching on the land and slaying thousands upon thousands of Native Americans? When the Dutch settled? When most of the population in 'American' settlements were English? When we had influxes of Italians and Irish? When the slave trade brought Africans to the south? When there was a large Chinese immigration to the west coast? When we took in refuges from Europe and other parts of the world? Prior to 1965? Drawing a line is petty. Suddenly you add Mexicans into the mix and it's no longer "America"? When my ancestors immigrated from Europe to the western United States six generations ago it was still Mexican territory. Later the Mexican-American War was fought and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo suddenly made my white Mexican forefathers white Americans. While I agree that illegal immigration is a huge issue which the federal government has not properly addressed my citizenship is by no means more valid than any naturalized citizen no matter where they were born. My children will be no less a citizen or American than I just because their mother was born overseas.
