» Between rising hunger and the prospect of still more supply shortages, dark clouds are hovering over the global food system. Not only has the war in Ukraine limited access to, and raised prices for, food, and fertiliser, but extreme weather events are disrupting production, and economic downturns have diminished people's ability to afford adequate and nutritious diets. Climate change is fuelling droughts and exacerbating water scarcity, adding to the list of threats facing agricultural production.

» As a beautiful dawn crept over Lake Geneva on June 17, a remarkable thing happened at the World Trade Organization's headquarters. After nearly six days of negotiations at the WTO's 12th Ministerial Conference -- culminating in a marathon 48 hours of non-stop talks -- ministers and senior officials from the body's 164 member states adopted a historic package of agreements. The multilateral deals -- of a scale and scope that the WTO has not achieved since the mid-1990s -- will help people, businesses, and the planet.

» The war in Ukraine is causing immense, heart-wrenching human suffering. At the World Trade Organization (WTO), an institution based on the rule of law and established to help forge peace, we find the violence abhorrent to our fundamental principles. We echo UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's call for the bloodshed to stop, and we wish for a prompt and peaceful resolution of the conflict.

» The development and approval of safe and effective Covid-19 vaccines less than a year after the start of the pandemic is a truly remarkable achievement, offering hope that the end of this crisis may be in sight. What will follow in the coming months -- or even weeks -- will be equally remarkable: Covid-19 vaccines will be made available to people around the world -- not just in the wealthiest countries -- at roughly the same time.
