» Not all flowering plants are created equal. Some bloom only seasonally, others almost all year round. The flowers of trees commonly seen along city streets and provincial roads, like Cassia fistula or golden shower, Delonix regia or flame tree, Pterocarpus indicus or pradoo, Peltophorum pterocarpum or copper pod tree, Tabebuia rosea or pink tabebuia, and the various species of Lagerstroemia can be enjoyed only once or twice a year. But luckily for us in tropical Thailand, there are many shrubs and vines that we can plant to make our surroundings colourful at all times.

Justice reform can start with small steps

» True to the nature of Thailand’s scandal-plagued justice system, even the sliver of encouraging news that emerged last week was born out of crisis. It would be easy to think everything is broken — the jails are overcrowded recruiting grounds for ever-increasing drug gangs; the police are under fire for their confession first, evidence second culture; the courts are caught in the middle and often have their own independence and objectivity called into question. But there were signs last week that the Justice Ministry is determined to make an impression on at least some items on that long list of problems.

» The Koh Tao murders have drawn global focus to the extremely poor status of the Thai judicial system. We are not surprised though. Thailand is still a third world country at its core. The legal system has a giant “For Sale” sign on it. Justice is only meted out at a price, and so is injustice. The one with the most money always wins. From the policeman on the street to the judges in court — all can be corrupted.
