Death penalty is no answer
News, Editorial, Published on 30/05/2019
» Amendments to the criminal law to make severe sex crimes punishable by death may cause some people to rejoice. Yet, it would be wrong to think that capital punishment is a panacea for the long-standing problem.

'Invisible' brides boost economy
Oped, Published on 08/12/2022
» Mail-order brides are those who register themselves in catalogues to be chosen by men for marriage. Since the mail-order bride industry forms an essential part of the informal economy in several underdeveloped and developing Asian economies, data misses the economic participation of Asian mail-order brides, making them "invisible" recruits in the process.

Smells like a scam
Oped, Postbag, Published on 06/05/2022
» Re: "Fast-money trail", (PostBag, May 5). I agree with most right-thinking people like Samanea Saman (BP, May 5) that the Thai Pass fiasco may be a simple money grab led by insurance companies forcing worthless Covid policies on tourists.

Pedro Almodovar celebrates life in all its messy turns
Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 23/11/2021
» Pedro Almodovar's films turn camp into art, or art into camp. Or even better, he isn't bothered all that much whether the candy-coloured hijinks, the sexual anything-goes, the carnal perfidy and maternal heartbreak in his movies are a form of art or a celebration of camp. And we, the audience, shouldn't either. Almodovar, the internationally best-known Spanish filmmaker, thrives on something much simpler, I think. Freedom.

Stamping out violence
Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 09/11/2020
» About 7% of women -- largely from southern Thailand -- and 8.4% of men in the Central Region of the country continue to believe that domestic violence is justified in a relationship, according to the Sixth Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey for Thailand (Mics 6), a national survey conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO) every three years with help from Unicef.

Life, Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 15/10/2019
» Transformation is the key to survival, both in life and in work, according to Jakkaphong "Anne" Jakrajutatip, CEO of JKN Global Media, who was recently awarded Asia Media Woman of the Year at Content Asia Summit 2019 in Singapore. She is the first Thai person -- and also the first transgender woman -- to win the award.

Call me by her name
Life, Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 13/07/2018
» While the interest and market for gay-themed stories continue to grow -- on online channels, on television series and in cinemas -- the sub-genre of lesbian movies has still got some catching up to do, especially in Thailand. Once in a blue moon, a lesbian film would drop on our cinema or TV screens, and the ones that had an actual cultural impact can be counted on one hand. At last week's LGBT Film Festival, which saw an enthusiastic turnout, there was then just one lesbian film among a dozen gay-themed international titles. All of this seems to signify that truly fair representation of gender and sexuality in the media still has quite a way to go.
