China's future depends on how it tames its rivers

    Oped, Published on 11/08/2020

» The East Asian monsoon is pummelling China this summer. As of late July, flood alerts had been issued for 433 rivers, thousands of homes and businesses had been destroyed, and millions of people were on the verge of becoming homeless. The water level of Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake, has risen to a record-breaking 22.6 metres, prompting authorities in the eastern province of Jiangxi (population: 45 million) to issue "wartime" measures. Chinese citizens have not been threatened with devastation on this scale in more than 20 years, and this is likely just the beginning.

Don't let the pandemic turn into pandemonium

    News, Published on 04/08/2020

» In the 17th-century epic poem Paradise Lost, the English poet, John Milton, recounts the biblical story of the temptation by Satan to abuse the fruits of the creation, leading to the fall of Adam and Eve and their punishment of being expelled from the Garden of Eden. In describing such a dramatic change of the human condition, Milton coined the term "pandemonium". It literally means abode of all demons (or hell), from the Greek word pan-, "all", and daimon, "demon(s)". In fact, in that story the cause of the devastating crisis is demoniac bad advice given and accepted by the then two human beings. After the recent experience of one of the worst global calamities of our time, due to Covid-19, many governments are trying to contain humankind's risks of losing the paradise of the modern world order and the promised quality of life in the third millennium.

They are more lonely, depressed and suicidal than any previous generation. They are more likely than earlier generations to be poorer than their parents and they are the first generation expected to live shorter lives than their parents. They also care deeply about racial justice and led the largest climate strikes last year.

    A just post-pandemic transition

    Oped, Published on 24/07/2020

» It will take time for Covid-19's economic consequences to come into full view. But some of the costs are already becoming apparent, beginning with the devastation the crisis will wreak on the global workforce. With climate change also threatening to hurt the world's most vulnerable workers, the need for a holistic crisis response that emphasises both justice and sustainability could not be greater.

    Win-win solution for forests, people

    Oped, Published on 22/07/2020

» The forests are rapidly dwindling. But the people living in forest areas need to live off the land. Supporting them to practise sustainable or green farming saves both the forests and the locals' livelihoods. Why then is this win-win solution only applied to some local areas, and not yet scaled up to a wider scale?
