The Cornell connection: sound the all-clear, please

News, Published on 11/02/2012

» At first glance, Cornell University is about as far away from Thailand as imaginable, given its commanding location on the crest of a wind-swept hill overlooking the rocky Ice Age contours of Ithaca, New York, surrounded by precipitous gorges, dairy farms, ancient forests, apple orchards, spectacular waterfalls and expansive lawns of grass.

And they call it puppy love

Life, Napamon Roongwitoo, Published on 14/02/2012

» A friend of mine once told me that St Valentine's Day, for single women (not so much for single men), is when holiday and hell cross over. Everywhere you go, you see couples professing undying love, carrying big, overpriced bouquets. Restaurants are packed and full of lovey-dovey couples. Even little kids put heart stickers on their friends' shirt to show some love. What's a single woman to do? Panic, panic!

Stopping rot of corruption

News, Umesh Pandey, Published on 15/02/2012

» There is much that I have been contemplating writing about, be it Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's visit to a hotel, or the far more interesting issue of how growth in Asia continues to be impressive despite the pessimism that's sweeping the world. But nothing, in my view, beats the stories coming out of India at the moment.

Quick executions no solution to drug problem

Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 15/02/2012

» Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung may want all condemned drug traffickers put to death as quickly as possible, but this would not solve the problem of widespread drug abuse. Instead, it would paint the country in a negative light, with little positive effect.

A call for animal rights

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 16/02/2012

» The Year of the Dragon, which is this year, is believed to be a tough year for those born in the Years of Dog, Goat and Rabbit. However, every year is a difficult year for animals in Thailand since this country still lacks the law to fight cruelty against animals and better animals' lives. Worse, not all legislators see the importance of having such a law.

Govt to build big dam on seismic fault

News, Sanitsuda Ekachai, Published on 16/02/2012

» Building a big dam on an active earthquake fault. Isn't that plain crazy?

Don't just keep relying on luck

News, Thitinan Pongsudhirak, Published on 17/02/2012

» Faraway tensions from the precarious brinkmanship in the Middle East have reached Thai soil with the apparent terrorist bungle in central Bangkok. The government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra continues to deny international terrorist presence in Thailand, but the weight of evidence increasingly points to the contrary. Thailand is a soft target among third-country theatres of operation. Unless the Thai authorities beef up their security measures and conduct deft diplomacy in the near term, the risk of this easygoing country degenerating from a transit point for illicit crimes to an outright staging ground of international terrorist violence will grow.

Great game hits town

News, Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 19/02/2012

» When three men _ who happened to be Iranians who like Thai women (doesn't everyone?) and who aren't very good around bombs _ set off three explosions in Bangkok, it was not just an isolated incident.
