Fiddling with photos is now a lot more fun

Life, James Hein, Published on 16/01/2013

» This is definitely the age of the digital camera. What many people don't understand when they take digital snaps, however, is that the results can be a lot better with a bit of processing. In the old days the best way to do that was with Apple software and there are those who will maintain this view until they die. The PC started to come into its own about 20 years ago when Adobe released its first Windows version of Photoshop and about 10 years ago support started for RAW camera images. Then, in 2007, out came Lightroom, a product designed exclusively for the digital camera user.

Is Twitter's number up?

Life, James Hein, Published on 17/10/2012

» Some time ago the stock exchange in the US had problems because online trading was new and how quickly people would react to a perceived change in the market was unexpected. Fast forward to 2012 and the age of the tweet and online flash mobs and we find ourselves in a similar situation but with a broader scope.

Resistance to change is futile, but persists

» Have you ever noticed how governments, MPs, public servants and large, old organisations are very slow to adopt new technologies and embrace change?

Buying and selling digital books

Database, James Hein, Published on 03/11/2010

» There was a book fair in Frankfurt recently. For many people, the idea of a book is something you sit with at the park or in bed at night and slowly turn the pages as the story unfolds. If you are a book writer, the idea is that you spend months sending a manuscript to publishers and agents in the hope someone will want to take it on.

The cloud has been around for a while

Database, James Hein, Published on 13/10/2010

» If you are a business, then at the very least you need some way to communicate with your customers and your suppliers, and them with you. For some this means a phone call, an order entry system, emails and even messaging systems. If you are dealing with people outside the country, then a VoIP system will save you a lot of money.

Personal data privacy: What are your rights?

Database, James Hein, Published on 19/05/2010

» Should you have the right to your own data? Privacy people think we should, and I think we should in many instances, but governments and some providers are no so positive about this.

Some programs everyone should have

Database, James Hein, Published on 12/05/2010

» There are some programs that everyone should have on their computer because eventually you are going to need one or more of them. If you use the Internet and download files then the different types will need to be handled, opened, viewed or played. Everyone has their list of favourites. I have seen lists that include products like iTunes and McAfee that I would never allow on any computer of mine.

Companies play the upgrade waiting game, MS massages its stats

Database, James Hein, Published on 17/03/2010

» Microsoft recently made the claim that they had sold 90 million copies of Windows 7 since it reached the manufacturers in July last year. What actually happened then was that OEMs were told to put Win 7 on new machines by default. So the word "sold" is a little misleading here.

What's in a name? On the net, who knows

Database, James Hein, Published on 03/03/2010

» How much can you trust an Internet Domain? When you go to, say, http://www.reliableshopping. com, how much can you find out about it? Theoretically when a domain is registered it should have information on who did so. You can use tools like http://www.whois.net to do a quick check. In the case of the site above, I found it is owned by godaddy.com. Trying http://www.internic.net to look it up found even less info, but I did ascertain that the domain will expire soon.

The extermination of all things impure from Apple

Database, James Hein, Published on 24/02/2010

» Is Oracle a trusted form of Open source software? With the recent resignation of Ken Jacobs, the man tipped to look after MySQL, people are starting to wonder. Jacobs was known as the friendly face of Open source in Oracle. When Oracle did not assign MySQL to Jacobs, he quit. Jacobs did say that he believed Oracle would look after MySQL and "make it better".
