Don't rush to reopen

News, Editorial, Published on 31/08/2020

» In an attempt to revive tourism, the government came up with a plan to reopen the country to foreign visitors under the so-called Phuket model, which was, at best, cautiously welcomed by businesses. While the plan is worth trying, the government must pay heed to local residents' views, or the scheme could fail.

Understand problems to solve them

Oped, Published on 13/08/2020

» What is happening with the Covid-19 economic crisis is that governments and economists around the world are trying to solve it on a "trial and error" basis because no one actually has experience with a crisis of this magnitude. By presiding over a public mindset of "zero" local virus infections, the government raised unrealistic expectations at a high price. The fiasco that transpired in Rayong last week, when an infected Egyptian air force official was allowed to roam in a shopping mall and thereby fuelled fears of "second wave" infections, should serve as a wake-up call for an overdue change in virus-fighting strategy.

Soldier slip-up unforgivable

News, Editorial, Published on 14/07/2020

» While the government and the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) keep warning the public to "not let their guard down" in order to prevent a second wave of infections, it is becoming evident that state agencies are the ones failing to strictly abide by anti-coronavirus measures.

The greatest test

Life, Arusa Pisuthipan, Published on 13/04/2020

» Songkran is strange this year. There will be no water war where people dowse buckets of water on each other to cool off from the summer heat. We are encouraged to stay home and not to visit our old parents. Or if we do, we have to stay at least 2m away from them.
