Resurrecting a classic

Life, Published on 04/09/2023

» Along with his early directorial efforts during the late 1990s and early 2000s like Fun Bar Karaoke and Last Life In The Universe, 6ixtynin9 (1999) was remembered as the film that helped Pen-ek Ratanaruang become recognised as a trailblazer in Thai New Wave cinema and for bringing stories of crime and dark humour to a new generation. Due to its unique and unconventional story, 6ixtynin9 was not a commercial success in Thailand at the time, but it went on to become a cult classic and is highly regarded abroad. It won the Don Quixote Award, a Special Mention at the Berlin International Film Festival and Best Feature at the Brooklyn International Film Festival in 2000.

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 25/08/2023

» For us Asians, the legendary Monkey King character which dates back to 16th century Chinese mythology is nothing new. Based on one of the great classic Chinese novels Journey To The West from the Ming dynasty, the plot revolves around Sun Wukong aka the Monkey King, one of three disciples that follow Buddhist monk Tang Sanzang west to India in search of holy scriptures.

Memes of dissent

Life, Thana Boonlert, Published on 14/08/2023

» It is not as whimsical as it seems. After the onset of the largest pro-democracy movement since the military coup in 2014, university and high school students cuddled hamster dolls and ran around in circles. "Delicious tax!", hundreds of them sang, from a cartoon jingle at Democracy Monument in late July 2020. Crowdsourced from a social media platform, Hamtaro, a shorthand for caged mice demanding freedom, spawned many internet memes, including a greedy caricature of junta leader Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha.

A quirky mystery comedy

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 28/07/2023

» I went into Netflix's latest movie They Cloned Tyrone without any expectations, but this turned out to be one of the best original films the platform has come out with this year. The film is a unique blend -- quirky, mysterious and funny. It's a blaxploitation throwback set in modern times with a sci-fi twist and is definitely thought-provoking.

Theatre of mix-up and mayhem

Life, Alongkorn Parivudhiphongs, Published on 07/07/2023

» A revival can be a boon or a bane, but one can't predict whether the show can recreate the same magic with a new audience as it first did when staged decades ago. Fortunately, this is not the case for Dreambox's Oonlamaan Lung Baan Saithong (Chaos Behind The Golden Sand Mansion), which recently made a comeback after 18 years. The audience, who partook in its opening night last Friday to celebrate its 100th show, left the venue with beaming smiles.
