Dust in the wind and down the throat
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 06/10/2019
» You know there's something amiss in Bangkok when you wake up to the sounds of birds coughing. Well maybe it wasn't quite that bad, but this week our feathered friends sounded decidedly under the weather. So it came as no surprise to read the gloomy headlines about "toxic smog" returning to Bangkok.

Covid-19 pushes plastic waste rise
News, Apinya Wipatayotin, Published on 24/04/2020
» Over the past year, Thais have become more aware of the impact of single-use plastics on the environment and joined hands to reduce its consumption. But as the country has been hit by the spread of Covid-19, forcing people to spend more time at home, the amount of plastic waste generated has surged by 15%.

The Latin explosion
Guru, Published on 04/10/2019
» Many Latin-themed bars have popped up across Bangkok in the last few years, but Flamenco sets itself apart with an eclectic design that looks like an upper-class Spanish house. The walls are splashed with maroon-red and luminous gold colours, while carpets and velvet furniture adorn the floor. The space, while feels intimate, is quite extensive with divided zones of a cigar room, a live-stage next to the dance floor, a moderate-sized outdoor seating area and a lounge that comes with large steel structures, built purposely to fit more than 100 bottle of spirits. There's also a greater focus on music with live-performances by different bands nightly. Check their monthly calendar to see if it's either swing, jazz or blues that'll take the stage the night you're planning to hit the club.

» Inspired by his travels throughout Thailand, chef Krit Prathuangsukh's new tasting menu at Basil at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit showcases the diversity of Thai ingredients and cooking techniques. Each dish of the nine-course "Thai Journey" menu reinvents a regional classic with a modern twist, while remaining distinctly Thai.

The Pheu Thai circus
News, Postbag, Published on 05/08/2017
» How many times have Pheu Thai politicians shot themselves in the foot. I've lost count. This time they just shot themselves in the mouth, blaming the government for the floods in the Northeast (BP, July 31). Have they forgotten what they did in 2011?

Creating a buzz
Life, John Clewley, Published on 19/02/2019
» Some years ago, I reviewed Colin McPhee's marvellous book, A House In Bali, about life and gamelan music (traditional Balinese music -- mainly percussive and driven by metallophones or gongs) in Bali during the 1930s. Published in 1947, the book details how a young man, after hearing some rare gamelan music on old records, journeys to Bali in 1929 to seek the music that will change his life. It is an enchanting book, well worth reading.

The music of James Bond
Life, Harry Rolnick, Published on 02/11/2017
» If you want to win a sure-fire bet, just ask any moviegoer, any fan of the James Bond films: "Who composed the theme that goes through every single James Bond movie? The one that goes dum di-di dum dum dum?
