Thailand's Miseducation

» The conventional notion is that you can rely on textbooks as your source of basic knowledge on a subject matter that you're interested in, but that it isn't always the case in Thailand. You see, some Thai books or educational materials don't seem to care much about being factually correct and, sometimes, politically correct, too. Here are some recent examples for your miseducation.

» Bruno Menard, former executive chef at Restaurant L'Osier, Tokyo, which received three Michelin stars under his helm, recently visited Pimalai Resort & Spa, Krabi, to create a sublime four-course dinner, as part of the resort's Gastronomy Journey. This was the second time the world renowned French chef and MasterChef Asia judge created special dinner for Pimalai and this collaboration will become an annual event onwards. We simply couldn't refuse an opportunity to chat with him.

» Jim Ophorst marries fine dining with farm-to-table as chef de cuisine at PRU restaurant (prurestaurant.com), Trisara Phuket. Originally from the Netherlands, Orphost is hands-on in sourcing his ingredients and wants to show off the natural vibrancy of local flavours through multiple-course dinners. We spoke to Ophorst about his culinary journey and his thoughts on The Michelin Guide Bangkok, Phuket, and Phang-nga 2019, to be published later this year.

» Thailand breathed a collective sigh of relief on Monday night after a team of 12 teenage football players and their coach were found alive inside Tham Luang Cave in Chiang Rai after 10 days of being trapped inside. Though we may be able to sleep sound, there's still a long way to go (and many more dramas, rumours and photos of handsome rescuers to come) before they are evacuated to safety. It's already been reported that they may have to stay there for months so let's keep our fingers crossed and our hopes alive.

» Tanawat "Pop" Prakammanu, 26, works as a graphic designer at an advertising agency in Bangkok and runs his Facebook page Prakammanu (fb.com/Prakammanu), where he showcases his drawings in his spare time. He went viral after publishing an action-filled Avengers-inspired comic with a cast full of figures in Thai politics from PM Prayut Chan-o-cha to student activist Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal. Pop poked fun at them with sharp humour (even though he insists he's a casual observer) and witty dialogues. His latest effort has been shared more than 100,000 times. His page isn't the first to poke fun at Thai politics but we think it's definitely worth checking out especially if you want to see Uncle Tu having a fist-fight with Thaksin Shinawatra. We talked to Pop about his serious art of poking fun but at, his request, no serious political comment.

» Kachain "Kyng" Bodinittidej is a commercial producer who's behind many TV ads and a collector of rare and exotic plants. The 40-year-old adman also created a special fanzine titled "Mr. Brown", which features key figures in the first edition of Made By Legacy flea market and Thai vintage scene. The upcoming ninth edition of Made By Legacy, which takes place until Sunday at Pepsi Pier (go to our Activities page for more info), comes with a green twist. On top of vintage items and food, you'll be able to see and buy exotic plants, thanks to Kyng who curates and selects many plant and gardening shops, as well as plant collectors to showcase their green treasures. Not only it will serve as background for photo ops but also sources of awe, inspiration and appreciation for our green friends.
