A step closer to a world without nuclear weapons

    Oped, Published on 20/01/2021

» Last year, the world commemorated the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, events so catastrophic that they burnt themselves into our collective memory, and have continued to define our geopolitical landscapes to this day.

High time to boost ethical tourism

    Oped, Published on 11/12/2020

» With tourism at a standstill, elephants in Thailand continue to be the forgotten victims of the pandemic. Despite signs of an economic bounce back, the future of tourism still remains uncertain. World Animal Protection understood the need to satisfy the immediate needs of these elephants and since April has supported over 70 elephants, and their mahouts, in 11 camps.

    The death of vote-buying

News, Alan Dawson, Published on 25/11/2018

» The government announced a brand new and unexpected Big Welfare Aid Programme (BWAP). Cynics, sceptics, anti-regime critics and even honest people wondered if the sudden decision to help the least-advantaged Thais just possibly has something to do with that other government programme -- so tantalisingly unspecified -- of an election that for the fourth year in a row has been pencilled in for, in the highly familiar phrase used by the general prime minister, "next year".

    An old idea rejected again

    News, Editorial, Published on 02/10/2018

» Ex-prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh has got his name in the media again, but for old, tired and ultimately unacceptable reasons. The 86-year-old former army chief trotted out his tired recommendation for solving the country's political division and problems. Once again he plumped for what he and a handful of supporters have previously called a national government. He has ever so slightly altered his plan by calling for an indefinite delay in national elections and formation of what he now calls "interim government".

An acid test for fair polls

    News, Editorial, Published on 24/09/2018

» Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his regime have recognised from the start that military rule had a finite life that could only end peacefully with elections. Gen Prayut clearly showed that with his serial promises of an election "next year". It is reasonably clear that 2019 will belatedly deliver the promise, but not in the best way. Increasingly, the regime seems to be abusing its own rules to pursue an indefinite hold on power by unjust means.

    News, Editorial, Published on 21/08/2018

Three-year-old Nuran Adiya Ma was left locked in the school van when pre-kindergarten activities began last Wednesday at her Bamrung Muslim School in Pattani. The terrible result was revealed when her mother arrived to pick her up in mid-afternoon. The van driver is under arrest, the school head and teachers are shocked, the family is grieving.

    Halt Mekong blast plan

    News, Editorial, Published on 02/10/2017

» China wants a favour from Thailand, and last week sent a straight-talking official to lobby for it. Beijing is "developing" the Mekong River in a number of ways. One current project is to clear the waterway so that 100-metre cargo boats can travel the roughly 700km from Yunnan province's navigable headwaters to Luang Prabang in Laos, to boost trade. There are still sections of the river where such large shipping can't pass.
