    Samsung looks to rebound

Life, James Hein, Published on 12/04/2017

» The Samsung Galaxy S8 will be in stores towards the end of April. Samsung had to get this one right after the Note 7 but they have ended up mostly doing an Apple. One obvious conclusion for the release of a 5.8 and 6.2-inch models so close together in screen size is because of the iPhone regular and S versions; it looks like Samsung thought they needed two models as well. There has been no upgrade in battery size nor camera capabilities between the S7 and S8. Then there are the prices, the most expensive Samsungs ever. Add all of this up and it detracts from what is still a rather nice phone.

    Keeping protected content

Life, James Hein, Published on 23/12/2015

» Are you allowed to keep protected content? Depending on the country you live in the response is not always "yes". Even in freedom loving places like the United States, some in government agencies try to restrict freedoms, like access to Tor. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), or at least a few of its agents there, certainly appear to have an anti-Tor policy and will actively try to have any public access points shut down. This has, of course, had little success in a place like the US but in other places the whole internet can be shut down.

Watch for the dust in the machine

» Over time computers break down. In my case it was a power supply that went with a bang, not a whimper, accompanied with a flash of sparks, some smoke and that lovely ozone smell.

    Updated Microsoft Office lands

Life, James Hein, Published on 30/09/2015

» I use Microsoft Office tools fairly regularly including Word, Excel, OneNote, Visio and Project. Apart from Project, I didn't make the jump to 2013. A couple of years later, version 2016 has been announced. In between they have released updated Apple and Android versions of different products in the broader suite. In the past few years Microsoft's strategy seems to be aimed primarily at the Office 365 Cloud space.

    Intellectual theft isn't so expensive

Life, James Hein, Published on 13/05/2015

» So which countries are the worst at enforcing intellectual copyright? According to the latest US annual Special 301 Report, the top two are China and India. There are, of course, more in the full priority watch list, including Thailand and Russia. Thailand was singled out for a number of issues, including what is described as "media-box piracy", those being storage devices with the capability of playing HD content preloaded with large quantities of pirated material and sold as a package. This approach is currently growing in popularity in Asia.

    Protect your photographs from spies

Life, James Hein, Published on 21/05/2014

» Beware the Cloud, or at least Google+. I took a picture with my phone recently, something I don’t do all that often, and happened to visit Google+ soon after. The first thing I saw was the photo I’d just taken. This was the first time I discovered that any photos I take are by default sent immediately to my Google+ area. You would think this was a setting in the Android G+ app but it is instead in the Photos apps. Google’s default push is to fully open up everything you do to Google, so be careful what setting you have and how you use your camera. To be fair the photo was in a “protected” area but we all know how well that kind of protection remains in the open-to-the-world-plus-their-dog environment we live in.

The shape, and size, of things to come

Life, James Hein, Published on 09/10/2013

» When someone uses the word smartphone, most people these days probably automatically think of Apple or Samsung. This makes sense because between them they account for over half the world's devices in this category. Apple started the trend and in recent times Samsung has taken over and been leading ever since. Beyond the United States, Australia and Europe, the fastest growing markets are China, India and Brazil, all of which have their own increasingly popular brands. In China, for example, Samsung is the current leader, but numbers two and three are Lenovo and Yulong Coolpad _ I've never heard of the latter either although they released 48 models last year. Apple isn't even fourth with ZTE, Huawei and Xiaomi coming next on the list.

Court's Apple ruling sure to be appealed

Life, James Hein, Published on 05/09/2012

» The big news in the mobile-phone and tablet marketplace is the US-centric Apple win against Samsung in the United States. Many people regard this decision as ridiculous and think that it highlights how mercenary and capitalist Apple has become.

When upgrading can be a backwards step

Database, James Hein, Published on 10/11/2010

» It can sometimes be interesting to see how people view computers and applications. Many years ago I put together a small Access application that was used by my father, an archaeologist, to track pottery sherds discovered in digs in Thailand. It wasn't a very complex application in IT terms _ a simple database and a couple of forms _ but it was very useful to my father for his work.
