    Harry shows Bangkok some Styles

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 14/03/2023

» The accessory du jour was the fluffy pink boa. The colour scheme was hot pink -- pink pants, pink boots, pink cowboy hats, pink eyeshadow, pink hijabs. Or if not pink, then anything in the tooth-aching shades of the rainbow. It was a lively, joyous sight on Saturday night, a show of hot-hue aesthetics in a defiant contrast to the brutalist concrete skeleton of Rajamangala Stadium. How I wish concrete-mad Bangkok could look like this every day!

» The accessory du jour was the fluffy pink boa. The color scheme was hot pink - pink pants, pink boots, pink cowboy hats, pink eye-shadow, pink hijabs. Or if not pink, then anything in the tooth-aching shades of the rainbow. It was a lively, joyous sight on Saturday night, a show of hot-colored aesthetics in a defiant contrast to the brutalist concrete skeleton of Rajamangala Stadium. How I wish concrete-mad Bangkok could look like this every day!

New political bloods meet baptism of fire

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 10/03/2018

» The right is thrown into panic, like a sick man visited by an apparition of death. Sealed in a cage of obliviousness, they fear the galloping sound of apocalyptic horsemen. Or in their mind, the barbarians at the gate, rattling the rusty chain of power.

    Scarlett does non-human, again

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 31/03/2017

» It's possible that when we all die and are reborn as cyborgs or aliens, we'll look like Scarlett Johansson: white and bewildered, gamine-haired and supremely athletic, fierce on the outside and gentler within. The actor's recent list of post-human roles is impressive. She is an extraterrestrial seducer sucking men's souls in Under The Skin; a human-CPU-God hybrid in Lucy; a cybernetic assassin in Ghost In The Shell, which is our subject today. Mind you, even devoid of her physical self, she still embodies the voice of artificial intelligence, as in Her, in which she purrs her way into the consciousness of that world.

    Pain, bluster, to no avail

» On paper this is a pantheon of contemporary French acting: Gaspard Ulleil, Marion Cotillard, Lea Seydoux, Vincent Cassel and Natalie Baye. The director is Xavier Dolan, the Quebecois wunderkind who's had his five films premiered at Cannes at the age of just 27.

    Ceylan gets his just deserts

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 04/01/2015

» Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Turkish chronicler of his countrymen’s psychological strife, won the Palme d’Or at the 67th Cannes Film Festival for his new film Winter Sleep. The accolade, announced last Saturday at the wrap of the world’s most influential movie festival, was well deserved. For this director has been orbiting the stratosphere of art cinema for over a decade now, his oeuvre some of the strongest work being produced by contemporary film-makers.

A look at the drawing board

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 15/08/2013

» At the D23 Expo last weekend in Anaheim, Rapunzel rubbed shoulders with Darth Vader as Minnie made friends with Captain America. Angelina Jolie swooped down as the horned, husky-voiced witch and John Goodman, last heard as Sully in Pixar's Monsters University, was declared a new legend. Attended by thousands of Disney fans, families and stars, D23 _ so named after the year that Walt Disney set up his studio in Hollywood _ was a biennial fan gathering and corporate expo where the creative vision of Walt and the entrepreneurial acumen of his organisation were celebrated, affirmed and expanded.
