» In 2009, Asean established a long-awaited regional human rights body in the form of the Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR). This commission has now undertaken a self-assessment of its work in recent years, and it covers some of the innovative measures identified below. » The security of the human person -- "human security" -- is of paramount concern whether in war or peace. As a notion to guiding international and national development since the 1990s, it has gained traction in underlining freedom from want, freedom from fear and freedom to live in dignity. It is thus auspicious that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is organising a key international conference tomorrow on human security and sustainable development, sharing and learning between international, regional and national experiences.

» This is a catalytic year for Asean, the 10-country organisation born in 1967 to drive regional integration in Southeast Asia. It is the year when Asean will become entrenched in the form of three interconnected communities: The Asean Political Security Community (APSC), the Asean Economic Community and the Asean Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC). These are all underpinned by blueprints to be put into action by the end of the year.
