Celluloid sleuths more fun in the old days

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/03/2023

» I was watching a US cops and robbers film the other day in which the police were using those large portable phones that were around just at the start of the cellphone revolution. Nothing dates a film more than the type of phones they are using. Those unwieldy early portable phones look quite comical these days and seem more cumbersome than convenient.

Familiar places gone but not forgotten

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 18/04/2021

» Last week I was walking along upper Sukhumvit after an excursion to the somewhat inappropriately-named Trendy building on Soi 13. I decided to drop in on my long-time travel agent nearby who I hadn't seen for a while, just to say hello. The lady in charge has an appealing personality and always cheers me up.

A song that takes you off the beaten track

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 07/02/2021

» Surfing through YouTube this week, I came across the novelty Australian song I've Been Everywhere, which I haven't heard for a long time. It doesn't have much of a melody, but it's fun, something we could all do with these days. It is also a useful geography lesson.

It all began with 'Newsgirl Nan' in 1960

» Switch on BBC World Service television and there is a good chance there will be a female news presenter. Among the more familiar faces these days are Lucy Hockings, Sally Bundock, Philippa Thomas and Karin Giannone. I'm always amazed how calm and relaxed they look in what must be such a stressful job.

» Travelling long distances overland has always captured the imagination and it seems the passion still remains. Three Land Rovers stopped over in Bangkok earlier this week in what is being called "The Last Expedition" which is taking on the more than 14,000km journey overland from Singapore to London.

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 07/07/2013

» The best tale of the week featured Transport Minister Chadchat Sittipunt attempting to get first-hand experience of the daily woes faced by Bangkok's long-suffering commuters.

    Taxis' long, winding road

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 09/09/2012

» In an attempt to resolve the problem of Bangkok taxi drivers who refuse to take passengers, the authorities have announced there will be 1,000 baht fines for uncooperative cabbies. All the passenger has to do if a driver refuses to go anywhere is to remember the licence plate number, the colours of the taxi and the driver's appearance or take a photo or record a video clip.

    An 86-year-old Bond girl?

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/08/2012

» Not being a huge fan of opening or closing ceremonies _ although the sport in between is fine _ I studiously ignored Danny's Boyle's production to launch London 2012. Well, not really. The cold truth is that I simply fell asleep before it started _ after all it was 3am in Bangkok and Crutch hasn't got the stamina for dawn-breakers these days.
