Journalist defiant about life post-coup
Oped, Johanna Son, Published on 17/03/2021
» Just as the protesters continue rallies and strikes against the Myanmar military's coup amid the brutal crackdowns by security forces, so have journalists been pushing ahead and struggling to do their jobs as storytellers.

A just post-pandemic transition
Oped, Published on 24/07/2020
» It will take time for Covid-19's economic consequences to come into full view. But some of the costs are already becoming apparent, beginning with the devastation the crisis will wreak on the global workforce. With climate change also threatening to hurt the world's most vulnerable workers, the need for a holistic crisis response that emphasises both justice and sustainability could not be greater.

Get serious on oil prices
Oped, Editorial, Published on 09/03/2022
» Urging the public to use private cars less often seems to be a sorely inadequate if not altogether irresponsible response to the oil price surge.

Are all of us ready for AI creative destruction?
Oped, Published on 24/04/2024
» The ancient Chinese concept of yin and yang attests to humans' tendency to see patterns of interlocked opposites in the world around us, a predilection that has lent itself to various theories of natural cycles in social and economic phenomena. Just as the great medieval Arab philosopher Ibn Khaldun saw the path of an empire's eventual collapse imprinted in its ascent, the twentieth-century economist Nikolai Kondratiev postulated that the modern global economy moves in "long wave" super-cycles.

Tales of Nessie won't stop resurfacing
Roger Crutchley, Published on 21/04/2024
» Today happens to be the 90th anniversary of the famous photograph claiming to be that of the "Loch Ness Monster". Raising children in the digital age
Oped, Published on 19/04/2024
» Parents in the 2000s are not taught parenting with addictive technology. The examples did not exist, and a comprehensive guide still needs to be written. We know parenting is a series of successes and failures with unsure outcomes. Presence (physical and mental) matters; however, technology is eroding parents' presence. Parents, with good intentions, are sidelining the tasks required to grow a well-rounded, responsible, and contributing member of society by farming out their duties to technology and drowning themselves in distractions. It is thus time to start teaching parents how to become better parents.

Handle Myanmar influxes with care
Oped, Vitit Muntarbhorn, Published on 19/04/2024
» 'Preparedness" and "humane response" offer keywords for handling the various mass influxes from Myanmar. Those influxes might range from civilians in search of refuge to fighters ("combatants") in flight, all the more poignant today because of the armed conflagration in that country and the precarious border situation.

International challenges demand action
Oped, Published on 18/04/2024
» It's not often an American ally addresses the US Congress, but when they do, it's time to listen. That was the case on April 12 when Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida spoke before a joint session of Congress in Washington to both thank America for its post-war friendship and to reaffirm the continuing political and strategic partnership between Japan and the US.
