    Bangkokian Phones

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 03/02/2017

» We're all familiar with the saying "Don't judge a book by its cover", i.e. don't judge people by their appearances. Well, we totally agree. It's 2017, so judge them by their phones instead!

    I'm Batman (kind of)

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 03/03/2017

» This past month, we saw the release of what was possibly the best movie featuring the Caped Crusader: The Lego Batman Movie (yeah, move over, Christopher Nolan). While we everyday people don't have the skills nor the money to become the Dark Knight, these gadgets may bring us ever-so-slightly closer to being the masked vigilante Bangkok needs. Not included: Batsuit with batnipples and tragic origin story.

    Living the life

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 17/03/2017

» It's typical nowadays to hear about an up and coming young artist, and if you think Ananya Birla is just another one of those, then you are sorely mistaken. True, the 22-year-old from India released her single, Livin' the Life back in November. But that's not all there is to Ananya. At 17, she founded Svatantra Microfinance, all the while studying at the University of Oxford and playing gigs. She also co-founded two other companies. The artist/entrepreneur was recently in Bangkok working on the remix of her single which is now out on iTunes and Spotify. Guru sat down with her to ask her some questions, while simultaneously feeling guilty that we haven't done half as much with our lives.

    The toymaker

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 07/07/2017

» If you've ever seen these quirky little toys around town, this is the guy to thank. Napat Phromphruk is the Project Manager and Developer of Mafia Factory, the company that creates the odd little things that have been named CE Toys. What's a CE Toy and what's the concept behind it? This is what Guru decided to find out in our interview with Mafia Factory's founder.

The new kids on the block

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 07/07/2017

» Bangkok is a huge and sprawling city with sights and wonders that captivate the tourist and resident alike. And there are some equally odd spots that would catch the interest of... well, some. The Big Mango is huge -- and it's not called the "Big" Mango for nothing, you know. There are places opening up all the time that give Bangkokians an inexhaustible list of things to do or places to visit. This week, we here at Guru give you six new places that have recently opened their doors to the public. Pay ‘em a visit, why don't you?

    Musical Intimacy

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 11/08/2017

» If you haven't heard of Sofar Sounds, we don't blame you. It's a community that keeps things on the downlow. Nevertheless, this community is a global one, and it holds gigs in cities like London, Cuba, and New Orleans, amongst many other cities. One of those cities is none other than Bangkok itself, and Guru was able to talk to one of its city leaders, Tom Hetrakul, about Sofar Sounds' recent relaunch.

    Fine (home) dining

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 15/09/2017

» There are people who like eating out at fancy restaurants helmed by Michelin-starred chefs and making it a special occasion. There are also people who prefer home-cooked meals and opt for simplicity over lavish dining. But who's to say you can't have both? Chef Pam Utharntharm is doing just that at The Table. It's not a conventional "restaurant" because she serves patrons at her home and cooks their meal in the comfort of her own kitchen. Guru talked to her about how she's bringing home-cooked Michelin quality food to Bangkokian foodies and helping them experience -- to use the words of the eternally wise Hannah Montana -- the best of both worlds.

    Gimme, gimme a crêpe

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 17/11/2017

» For some strange reason, crêpes are actually a common snack around Bangkok. We're not complaining. Those streetside vendors selling the Thai version of crêpes are worth your B30. But Thong Lor chill haven The Commons, known most commonly (see what we did there?) for a vast array of restaurants, has added another food destination that elevates the usual crêpes we're used to seeing around the Big Mango.

    High Thai dining

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 22/12/2017

» The setting: Not to be confused with Saffron, the indoor restaurant, Saffron Sky Garden is high above the hustle, bustle and traffic of Sathon Road on the 52nd floor. This garden lounge has recently reopened and caters to those who are looking to unwind after work over a drink or two, or perhaps a romantic night out with a special someone. Plus, it's a more intimate and less crowded alternative than the famous Vertigo and offers the same breathtaking view of the Bangkok skyline and Chao Phraya River. You can choose to sit at their high-stools and tables or choose the bigger tables with comfy couches if you're looking to order more than just drinks.

    Just a couple of foodies

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 09/02/2018

» It's that time of the year when couples come out in full-force, restaurants are jampacked, roses and chocolates are more expensive, and single people are more bitter than usual. Yes, St Valentine's Day is upon us and that means couples all over the place. We could have just given you a list of places you could go to for a special dinner (actually, we did -- check our Food listings). But in lieu of the upcoming "festivities", if you could call it that, we decided to round up a number of foodie power couples to get to know their favourite restos and what they do during on this romantic day. Perhaps we noobs could learn a thing or two from them.
