A force of friendship that's lasted a lifetime

Life, Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 05/08/2019

» Seventy years are roughly the span of a human's lifetime. And in those decades, one takes a step, learns and grows up with great friends who are always there with a helping hand. The same thing can be said of the relationship between Thailand and the World Bank Group, one of the largest sources of funding for developing countries, with a mission to eradicate extreme poverty and promote shared prosperity.

A second-class union

Life, Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 26/11/2018

» The prospect of marriage equality has always brought excitement and joy for LGBTI communities worldwide. In Thailand, the possibility of the civil partnership bill -- viewed as a step closer to coveted equality -- has been discussed frequently in our society lately, especially after a draft of the bill was released earlier this month on the Rights and Liberties Protection Department (RLPD) of the Ministry of Justice's website. But the initial excitement quickly faded when people read the fine print of what the bill really entails, and began questioning whether it really spells out equal rights.

Waiting for justice

Oped, Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 12/02/2018

» Making headlines this month is yet another scandal about the rich and powerful with their hands caught in a cookie jar. No, this is not the 26th watch — or would that be the 100th? — in Deputy PM Prawit Wongsuwon’s I-borrow-them-from-my-dead-friends saga. Nor is it the 300 million-baht loan to ex-police chief Somyot Poompunmuang. This time, a man has been caught with his fingerprints on a rifle, sitting in a forest next to protected wildlife carcasses.

The good, the bad, and the lovely

» Joyful tears were shed inside Bangkok Art and Culture Centre earlier this month when the Ardhanareeswara Award was given to individuals and groups who worked tirelessly to advocate for LGBTI rights and gender equality. And no one could've said it better than veteran activist Anjana Suvarnananda of the Anjaree group, a long-time organisation that advocates for lesbian and gay rights. This line of work is not something people usually get praised or recognised for.

Taking care of the nation's lifeblood

Life, Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 22/05/2017

» The recent news of a planned mass resignation by state sector nurses came as a shock to society. Nobody expected it. Not even the cabinet that initially rejected the listing of over 10,000 contract nurses as civil servants, which prompted resignation threats by a network of nurses who feel they are not getting what they deserve for all the efforts they've been putting in to care for people.

School, but not as you know it

An empathetic view

» Imagine a room full of red-lace bras, packs of condoms and a dancing pole -- did we just wander into an illicit, red-light district somewhere? No, these items are brazenly displayed at perhaps one of the most unusual museums in the country: This Is Us -- Empower Foundation's Museum of Sex Works in Thai Society.

Quick financial fix

Life, Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 02/05/2016

» Inside an air-conditioned room, a man with a grim face sat behind a tall counter with a metal barrier separating him from incoming clients. Suddenly, someone approaches him with a piece of jewellery in hand. After inspecting the item, the man names his price. After a negotiation, a contract is then signed as a promise for the client to pay back his loan plus interest and reclaim the item. Then, the client walks out with a handful of cash. The entire process lasts only a few minutes.
