» Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, residents of Jalandhar in northern India were never able to see the Himalayas as the view of the mountain range -- even in close proximity -- had always been clouded by air impurities. However, after traffic pollution dissipated following lockdowns, the Himalayas suddenly came into view, unveiling mountain peaks that had otherwise been unfamiliar to residents.

Memes of dissent
Life, Thana Boonlert, Published on 14/08/2023
» It is not as whimsical as it seems. After the onset of the largest pro-democracy movement since the military coup in 2014, university and high school students cuddled hamster dolls and ran around in circles. "Delicious tax!", hundreds of them sang, from a cartoon jingle at Democracy Monument in late July 2020. Crowdsourced from a social media platform, Hamtaro, a shorthand for caged mice demanding freedom, spawned many internet memes, including a greedy caricature of junta leader Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Travel notes
Life, John Clewley, Published on 23/05/2023
» Cambodia, like many Southeast Asian countries, enjoyed a golden era of popular music during the 1950s and 1960s, when Phnom Penh, known as the "Pearl of the Orient" became an important cultural centre, a breading ground for the meeting of Western rock and pop and Cambodian music. Author Dee Peyok in her fascinating new book Away From Beloved Lover: A Musical Journey Through Cambodia (Granta, UK, 2023) notes that "the music of East and West merged across Southeast Asia to the most fascinating mélange of instruments, attitudes and expressionism".

Finding the Right Turn
Guru, Published on 18/10/2019
» It's not often that a professional ballet dancer from San Francisco elegantly pirouettes his way through Bangkok to demonstrate and share his expertise. Ikolo Griffin was spotted as a star and immediately recruited by the San Francisco Ballet company at the age of eight and never looked back. In the last 30 years, his passion for ballet has seen him twirl on reputable stages, from the San Francisco Opera house, Paris Opera House and the Lincoln Center, New York to Dance Theater of Harlem and The Joffrey Ballet in Chicago. But Griffin has a different kind of spin to him. He decided to give back to the dance community by simplifying the very thing every ballet dancer dreads: the pirouette. Since then, his "Just Turns" workshop has been changing the lives of many dancers across the US. Now he's taking over the world -- one turn at a time -- as he arranges his workshops in other countries. GURU speaks to Griffin about his upcoming visit to Bangkok in an exclusive interview!

The coming storm
Life, Thana Boonlert, Published on 20/02/2023
» Climate change is an invisible killer. A family that lived in a hill station in India, an area known for its colder climate, took their sick child to the hospital. Nobody thought of dengue until a diagnosis confirmed it. Warmer temperatures in India and elsewhere make conditions more favourable for mosquitoes.
