Defence is no joking matter

» Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon has been rightly pilloried in both local and foreign media lately. He has shown himself to be lacking in a too-long series of events. These have run from his luxury watches to last weekend's tasteless feast of mangoes and sticky rice. Still, there was something especially disconcerting and disappointing in his offensive and supremely unfunny "joke" about last week's terrorist attack on the Thai-managed DusitD2 hotel complex in Nairobi.

Update the computer law

» If events over the past two weeks do not convince the government to write an actual law covering computer fraud, maybe nothing will. The first unfortunate event was to threaten a Chiang Mai magazine editor with a computer crime charge over something that had nothing to do with computers (or crime, come to that). The second was the reluctant admission by the country's second mobile phone company of security misbehaviour, putting tens of thousands of customers at risk. That is not a crime.

» There is no wilder weekend holiday in Thailand than Songkran, and that goes for neighbouring countries as well. In Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar, most business comes to a halt, as citizens and visitors mark the traditional New Year. Much fun is had, even if revellers sometimes err on the wrong side of decorum.

» The incident in which a transgender dance teacher, Dulaphat Mangkarat, at a northeastern university complained that she was verbally harassed in a lewd manner by her dean who insisted he was just joking shows there is still the need for education about gender awareness and equality among Thais.
