    Children on the margins

Outlook, Vasana Chinvarakorn, Published on 07/01/2010

» There is light in the eyes of these children as they laugh. It shines out of the darkness that surrounds them. Under the fluorescent glare, the youngsters are giggling or convulsing with laughter at the performances of their peers. One by one, they take turns staging one-of-a-kind shows - shadow and hand puppetry, a live theatre and singing skit, and even traditional ethnic Shan dances during which some appreciative audience members present the amateur performers with small cash gifts. The memorable night will no doubt be cherished by the youths for years to come. The best of both worlds

Database, Don Sambandaraksa, Published on 17/03/2010

» I must admit that the BlackBerry and I had a shaky start. I did not fully understand it much other than an extension of the corporate data centre when I first encountered it and since then, things have gone downhill with it becoming a symbol of the elite that made me feel queasy. The last straw was the launch of the Bold 9700 complete with pictures of socialites (RIM calls them opinion leaders who people aspire to, or something similarly politically correct) and their BlackBerry pouches in glass boxes for us to marvel at.

Database, Don Sambandaraksa, Published on 18/08/2010

» As the event started, everyone was told to make a presentation, even if it was a brief one. All the iPhone and BlackBerry users were given a big boo - with a big dose of good-hearted humour, of course.
