News and commands from the future

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 28/01/2015

» With the announcement of Apple's Q1 2015 figures released just a few hours ago, I expect there are already several reports online explaining the numbers and telling us why Apple is succeeding. Or failing. It depends on whose words you read. One thing the negatives will suggest is that what goes up, must come down, so in the final analysis Apple will fail. Just not yet.

Facebook stalking; hijacked smartphones

Life, James Hein, Published on 24/06/2015

» I am not a big social media user. I keep my profiles trim and any pictures to a minimum. I don't like Twitter at all for various reasons and I find most of the users of Tumblr focused on social engineering directions I don't agree with. All of that aside then, there is Facebook. Like many others I use Facebook to connect to people I have lost touch with, such as old high school friends whom I have no way of tracking down. In my case my Goodreads account is linked to Facebook to let people know what I am reading or have read. If you like reading and haven't tried it then take a look at www.goodreads.com. For me it also a great way to track what I have read and haven't in, say, a series I like.

Apple versus Samsung: It's a battle of the 8s

Life, James Hein, Published on 27/09/2017

» The big news from the usual sources is the new iPhone 8. After reading some of the specs and comparisons with the Samsung S8 and Note 8, I am a bit confused. Reviewers crow about facial recognition for the new iPhone, but the S8 range already has it. They go on about the edge-to-edge screen, but Samsung has had that for a few models now. In fact, almost point by point the Samsung range already has all the features of the iPhone 8 but at a lower price point, and that's before the Note 8 comes out.

Of hacking and international cyber affairs

Life, James Hein, Published on 21/12/2016

» According to some reports Russia was the one that hacked into the Clinton servers and arranged the email leaks to get Trump elected. Many of the US security agencies don't agree with this latest assessment. So what do we know? We don't know for example if the servers are running Microsoft or Linux operating systems, if the emails were grabbed in a single block or slowly over time. There is very little info. This is a classic case of one side blaming the other for a result they didn't want, and I suspect that the real story won't come out for some time.

Taking a bite out of Apple

Life, James Hein, Published on 30/03/2016

» It now appears the FBI will be able to get into the iPhone they are interested in without the help of Apple. No, it isn't a back door, but a non-disclosed asset, which is FBI-speak for a hacker. This could be someone from the Cyber Division or a White Hat (hacker) or even a friendly Black Hat that has been co-opted to break into the device. None of these options is outside the realm of possibility, because people have successfully hacked into iProducts before. Although the FBI was probably hoping for some kind of free-access method to future iPhones, this will at least get them access to the contents of this particular phone and perhaps some additional info on the terrorist in question.
