Disappearances bill nears final vote

» A recent seminar on May 24 hosted by the Ministry of Justice together with international organisations highlighted various stepping stones in the struggle against torture and enforced disappearances in Thailand. There was detailed discussion of the draft national law on the issue. There was also analysis of Thailand's most recent report on its implementation of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment (CAT), which was an eye-opener for the public.

» This is a catalytic year for Asean, the 10-country organisation born in 1967 to drive regional integration in Southeast Asia. It is the year when Asean will become entrenched in the form of three interconnected communities: The Asean Political Security Community (APSC), the Asean Economic Community and the Asean Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC). These are all underpinned by blueprints to be put into action by the end of the year.

Time for action over North Korea

» Last week, for the first time, the UN Security Council held a special session on the situation of human rights in North Korea (the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea – DPRK). While the range of human rights abuses there are well-known to the international community, the Security Council took years before opting to discuss the issue. It was the voluminous findings of a UN Commission of Inquiry on human rights violations in North Korea, published recently, which propelled it to the top of the UN agenda.
