    Backwards or forwards?

Life, James Hein, Published on 13/11/2013

» Why do software makers not bother to check with users to see if their latest upgrade is an improvement or a step backwards? In this case it is Visio 13. I've found a 770-point version of the good old Colossal Cave (or Adventure), a text-based interactive fiction game we used to play way back in the day. I was using Vision to make a map and when I used Visio 13 I could no longer easily make the connectors work as I wanted. This is not the only time I have had problems with new versions of Microsoft products trying to help me way past the point where I want any. I'm sure there is a setting somewhere buried deep under the Options Menu that will stop the behaviour I don't want, but it shouldn't be that hard. Perhaps a simple "make all options as per version 2010" would be the answer.

Earlier in the year, things were not looking so good but Apple had a strong finish on the back of the sale of their latest products and claimed that 340 million iPhones were sold. They also sold 14.1 million iPads last quarter and more than 4.6 million iMacs.

    Keeping pace with the tech

Life, James Hein, Published on 14/11/2012

» With the continued rush to bring out new applications and new technology the rate of change is leaving more and more people behind. The youngest are growing up using their parents' tablets and smartphones to play games instead of going outside to play. Those a couple of years older are already on child-orientated chat rooms, developing more advanced online skills. The under-20s are fluent in thumb-typing, chat abbreviations, emoticons, creating avatars and pretending to be someone they aren't. Those aged below 30 are more likely to be accessing the internet with a mobile device and may not even have a fixed phone line at home.

A worm that has me in fear - and in awe

Database, James Hein, Published on 15/12/2010

» I was pondering what I was going to write about this week when I saw the name Stuxnet. At first it looked like just another worm until I started to do some digging.

SharePoint: An assessment of 'Front Page on steroids'

Database, James Hein, Published on 27/10/2010

» I recently attended a Microsoft MVP presentation on SharePoint. I admit in advance to knowing very little about SharePoint. Up until the meeting, I thought it was a document storage system. After the meeting, as succinctly as possible I'd call it "FrontPage on super steroids".
