» If you need one, just one, reason to visit Udon Thani in Thailand's Northeast, it would be to eat at chef Weerawat "Num" Triyasenawat's brilliant Samuay & Sons. Since I first wrote about Num in 2018, Samuay & Sons has gone far beyond its menu of local ingredients cooked with medicinal values in mind.

100% fresh
Life, Nianne-Lynn Hendricks, Published on 04/01/2019
» A familiar pok-pok sound greets me as I enter the newly-renovated Charoen Krung favourite, 80/20. This is intentional, I later learn, intended to remind diners that 80/20 is a Thai kitchen serving Thai cuisine. The expanded space has a wall with murals by local artist Luke Satoru and Khun Rose, the mother of one of 80/20's chefs.

Joy amid hardship
Life, Thana Boonlert, Published on 10/05/2021
» Rusty tin shacks sprawl under high-rises and billboards. Rubbish scatters and floats down the foul-smelling river. Last year, fire broke out near a local mosque. With the third wave of the coronavirus outbreak, the Klong Toey neighbourhood is hanging by a thread.

Putting Thai food to the test
Life, Ploenpote Atthakor, Published on 21/09/2018
» The clock on the wall turned 10am. The ambience around the student centre building at a Nairobi university was dormant and calm, except a training kitchen where groups of young people, all wearing aprons and caps, busily made a dish. Life, Arusa Pisuthipan, Published on 29/12/2020
» From an animal market in Wuhan, to the spread of the novel coronavirus on board the Diamond Princess, to Seoul's nightclub scene, the virus has still not stopped wreaking havoc on the world's population. Just last week, the first case of Covid-19 was reported in Antarctica at a Chilean research station.

Lift up your voice
Life, John Clewley, Published on 10/10/2023
» South Africa has a long tradition of harmony singing, stretching back to Soloman Linda's famous 1933 song Mbube, which created a genre of its own to isicathamiya folk singing that led to one of the country's most potent popular genres, mbaqanga and on to gospel choirs.
