Apple versus Samsung: It's a battle of the 8s

» The big news from the usual sources is the new iPhone 8. After reading some of the specs and comparisons with the Samsung S8 and Note 8, I am a bit confused. Reviewers crow about facial recognition for the new iPhone, but the S8 range already has it. They go on about the edge-to-edge screen, but Samsung has had that for a few models now. In fact, almost point by point the Samsung range already has all the features of the iPhone 8 but at a lower price point, and that's before the Note 8 comes out.
The inflexibility of silicon

Current chips can cram over 10 million transistors into a square millimetre, and these can be scaled in 3D, giving us the storage solutions we have today. The problem for some applications is that silicon is quite rigid, and while it is not going away anytime soon, some applications want processors to be bendy.
Apple Store frustrations

» I was wondering how to start my first regular article for the year when I visited an Apple Store with a friend. He was planning to drop off an iPhone with a cracked screen for repair. The store was large, filled with rows of tables holding Apple gear. There were lots of customers and many Apple "Geniuses", each with a tablet to assist customers. I was carrying my Samsung Galaxy S5 and no lightning bolt had struck me. So far, so good.
Stupid is as stupid does

» Microsoft, or at least someone there, is stupid. Let me explain why I think so. Windows 8 is their latest and greatest operating system. It is provided on just about every new PC sold, including on the ultrabook my parents recently purchased. They were going away on an archaeological training dig in Cambodia and about an hour before they left tried out a new 2TB Western Digital Passport external drive to be used as one of two for backing up data they were going to collect.
