Oped, Editorial, Published on 31/03/2022

» The upcoming Songkran holiday will usher in a nationwide exodus, with hundreds of thousands of people heading back to their hometowns. This is a golden opportunity for tourism business operators to cash in on the celebrations, which would typically involve water-splashing on the streets.

Sunken 'ghost ship' could haunt Gulf fish

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 16/01/2022

» The week began promisingly with the discovery of a mystery "ghost ship" drifting in the Gulf of Thailand with no crew, cargo or documents aboard -- not even any defiant rodents. Unfortunately, the vessel sunk in rough seas off the Nakhon Sri Thammarat coast while being towed towards land by the Thai Navy.

Final curtain call for grand old station

Oped, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/12/2021

» There is some debate concerning the fate of Bangkok's 105-year-old Hua Lamphong railway station which is scheduled to close at the end of the month. Virus resurgence hits Asia recovery

Oped, Published on 22/10/2021

» In its recent Regional Economic Outlook (REO), the IMF notes that the pandemic has taken a turn for the worse in Asia since the spring, along with the region's growth outlook. The growth projection for the Asia and Pacific region is downgraded by more than 1% to 6.5% compared to the April 2021 forecasts -- more than for any other region. The downgrade is mostly due to the fast spread of the Delta variant amid initially low vaccination rates, which has tragically led to further devastating loss of lives, especially in the densely populated South and Southeast Asia. Although demand for Asian manufacturing and exports from Europe and the US has supported recoveries, real GDP outcomes in the first half of 2021 have disappointed.

Do we need more rockets in the stratosphere?

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 27/08/2021

» If you're worried about your "carbon footprint" -- a concept foisted on the world in 2004 by British Petroleum to persuade people that their own behaviour, and not giant oil companies like BP, is causing the climate problem -- then you definitely should not sign up for a sub-orbital space flight. Besides, you probably can't afford it (US$250,000 -- about 8 million baht -- per person).
