Anutin's racist silence

News, Postbag, Published on 15/03/2020

» Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul showed his bias, racism and ignorance by posting remarks regarding the Covid-19 crisis. He called farang "dirty" ... yet the coronavirus came from nearby China. He never mentioned the Chinese.

FFP was singled out

Oped, Postbag, Published on 14/03/2020

» Re: "It's not just about FFP", (PostBag, March 12). Khun Piya Samyan defends the Constitutional Court dissolving the Future Forward Party, because "it did violate the law regarding acquisition of income". This is about the "rule of law that is equally applied to all". I fully agree with Khun Piya that the law must be applied without fear or favour -- for if not, the government would be weaponising the law to slay its enemies, so to speak.

In the face of danger

Masking selfishness

News, Postbag, Published on 05/03/2020

» Re: "Outrage over mask shortages," (BP, March 3). I can't believe this. People are panicking over the shortage of face masks. In March 3 PostBag, a writer from Pattaya says they're charging 200 baht apiece for them there, and the March 2 editorial laments the shortage.

Unnecessary panic

News, Postbag, Published on 04/03/2020

» Re: "Outrage over mask shortages", (BP, Mar 3). In a free market, the law of supply and demand will dictate the price of any product unless it is controlled by specific laws. The article states that people who sell masks at inflated prices are liable to seven months in prison and a maximum fine of 140,000 baht, though the threshold that determines what constitutes an inflated price is not stated. However, perhaps the demand will reduce dramatically if people understood the scenario more clearly.

Moral right to protest

News, Postbag, Published on 03/03/2020

» Veera Prateepchaikul in his March 2 column, "Student rallies need careful handling", could more plainly have stated that the students have moral right and reason on their side. The government of the man who overthrew Thailand's supreme rule of law in 2014 to make himself prime minister, whose coup also trampled into the dirt, yet again, Thailand's form of democracy, now preaches that the law is sacred and warns about touching the high institution. The hypocrisy is obvious to the least intelligent or informed, let alone to the students at Thailand's top schools and universities.
