US can't rely on inflation shamanism

News, Published on 23/09/2024

» Google "shamanism" and you will find that it is "a tradition of part-time religious specialists who establish and maintain personalistic relations with specific spirit beings through the use of controlled and culturally scripted altered states of consciousness." Every element of that definition applies to monetary policymaking today, as illustrated by the reaction to the US Federal Reserve's Sept 18 decision to cut the short-term interest rate by 50 basis points.

You can look, but please don't touch

Roger Crutchley, Published on 01/09/2024

» When we were kids, most of us heard the words "don't touch that!" from our parents if we were in the presence of something breakable and possibly valuable. That's probably what a father wishes he had said when he took his four-year-old son to a museum in the Israeli city of Haifa last week.

I'm with the band -- how music made me British

News, Published on 31/08/2024

From the album (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, it's one of the few mid-1990s songs whose lyrics this Boomer can remember. I admired its Beatles-like off-kilter poetics, its love-will-save-the-day (if not, maybe it'll just save me) sentimentality. And Liam Gallagher's voice, while not beautiful, was pure plaintive Britpop, a plangent inflexion echoing from as far back as 1962's Love Me Do by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Protect forests, not profits

Editorial, Published on 18/08/2024

» The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) is drafting regulations for millions of villagers who have been living "illegally" in national parks. While the move is much needed, these regulations may violate human rights, and do a disservice to conservation efforts.

More work ahead on dope change

Editorial, Published on 28/07/2024

» The government's backtracking from its plan to relist cannabis as a narcotic drug is a step in the right direction. The reversal was ordered by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Tuesday, just days before a meeting of the Narcotics Control Board (NCB).
