Make way for the Bold Gendarmes

» The Paris Olympics have sparked memories of the time as an eight-year-old I was dressed up as a French Gendarme for a Christmas concert at a church hall in England. There were four of us and we had to perform The Bold Gendarmes, a popular song in the mid 1950s by French operetta composer Jacques Offenbach. It made gentle fun of the French policemen as the opening lyrics suggest:

Brits can still put on a good show

» Considering how depressing the world news has been lately, the coronation of King Charles III last weekend provided a brief diversion. It might not be everybody's cup of tea but the Brits certainly know how to put on a show if a bit of history is involved. They're good at pomp and pageantry and most importantly love a parade with plenty of horses.

» Last week's column concerning traditional British food unfortunately failed to mention one of the highlights of the year, the World Black Pudding Throwing Championships, held every September in Ramsbottom, near Manchester. It dates back to the Wars of the Roses in the 15th century between the House of Lancaster (red rose) and the House of York (white rose).

Reaching the finish line in Rio's Games

» Because of the 10-hour time difference, it's been quite gruelling following that sporting event down in the land where "coffee beans grow by the billions" -- I still can't get that song out of my head. I can safely claim to have dozed off while watching swimming, boxing, badminton, golf (sorry Ariya) and missing far too many gold medal performances.
