» We can clearly see that making gambling illegal is not effective in stopping gambling among Thai people at all. A complete ban is considered a measure that is too extreme without taking into account the social context or the needs of the people in the country. Therefore, we see illegal gambling, illegal casinos or even the underground lottery everywhere.

» Andy Cule's Dec 13 letter asks the reasonable question as to why vaccinated tourists would need to quarantine when coming to Thailand. Unfortunately, the vaccines have only been found to be effective in stopping symptoms of the virus, but have not been tested to see if they prevent infection and therefore the ability to infect others.

» I suspect there is more at play than mere incompetence with regard to the excessive "pruning" of Bangkok's urban trees (BP, April 27). At least some of the trees in question are Burma padauk (known in Thailand as pradu, and scientifically as Pterocarpus macrocarpus).

» It is interesting to see how the sugar industry has come out against the ban on the three harmful pesticides. The industry claims the ban will drive up the price of sugar. Somehow, the health of consumers and those who work in the industry does not factor into the equation. Everything is always evaluated in profit margins. The price hike would be enough to drive consumers away from sugar in general. I say, good riddance. Reducing sugar consumption would be a healthier decision for all. In fact, a cut to all sweeteners -- natural or artificial -- should be paramount to one's health and well-being.

» I wish to thank the 12 diplomats and their respective democratic countries for finally supporting the Thai people. Foreign Affairs Minister Don Pramudwinai's comment, "It's an intervention in our justice system" is a joke. Without a truly democratically elected government there is no justice.
