Rabbit R1's AI action intrigues

Life, James Hein, Published on 31/01/2024

» A new device out of CES 2024 in Las Vegas caught my eye. At first glance, the Rabbit R1 doesn't look all that interesting. It's a US$199 (in America), orange, handheld device that looks like an old-style gaming machine of some kind about the size of a stack of Post-It notes. It comes with a 2.88-inch touchscreen, a camera, a voice command button and a 4G LTE SIM card slot for connectivity beyond Wi-Fi. This is not a smartphone and won't replace it as there are no onboard apps, it won't pair with your smartphone and it doesn't talk to application APIs like cloud service gateways.

YouTube hypocrisy deserves flagging

Life, James Hein, Published on 27/09/2023

» YouTube is behaving badly again. A prominent presenter I occasionally watch, who has millions of subscribers, has been demonetised, for some possible actions 20 years ago. This is not a commentary on potential innocence or guilt, but on YouTube's processes. There are people whose lives are supported by revenue from their presentations on YouTube. This ranges from small fries all the way up to the big fish like the one here. When an individual is demonetised they can lose the ability to support themselves. In this case allegations were made by the media, not the police or authorities, and at the time of writing there have been zero charges made. YouTube is essentially saying, bring us all your viewers so we can hit them with ads and we can make lots of money, but you will be getting nothing for your work.

Pokemon, an oops and a US Navy blunder

Life, James Hein, Published on 27/07/2016

» Pokemon Go has taken the world by storm, well everywhere apart from places like China where Google is banned altogether so the frustrated potential Chinese players need to make a trip to Hong Kong to get to play. Pokemon players are fairly easy to spot. They are looking at their phone screens, heads down, fingers not moving or only occasionally. They will normally be seen in groups as everyone is trying to grab a Pokemon character at a specific location. Depending where you are in the world and the popularity of the game in your general area you may have noticed a drop in Internet speed.

Goodies galore unveiled at Nevada show

Life, James Hein, Published on 15/01/2014

» As I write this, CES _ the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas _ is under way with its displays of awesome gadgets. Nvidia announced a 192-core mobile processor that comes in 32-bit ARM format, or a 64-bit version. Yes, you read that correctly: 192-core. There's lots more from all the usual suspects, but so far the release of the Galaxy S5 hasn't been announced. That's expected next month.

Why pirate copies can seem so attractive

» It is time to say something about Windows 7, or rather some of my reader's experiences with it, which I thank them for sharing.
