» For the past three weeks I have been waking up to the sound of roosters, many of which sneakily start warming up their vocal chords well before dawn. With this evidence you don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to deduce that I have been in the Northeast of Thailand, or Isan. It has become a regular destination at the New Year and with the exception of the early morning calls from the chickens, it is always a pleasurable experience.

» Earlier this week, Qantas announced exciting plans for a non-stop 18-hour flight from London to Perth. That's wonderful if you happen to live in Perth, but the majority of Australians reside on the other side of the country, so they will still face a second four-hour flight, which will make the journey feel not quite so "non-stop".

» Anyone who has lived in Thailand for a while will have experienced some kind of unscheduled meeting with a snake. I've had a few close encounters over the years and have not exactly covered myself in glory. Just like crocodiles, I think snakes are best left to their own devices -- preferably as far away from me as possible.So what was I doing last week sitting face to face with a King Cobra?

» The Arctic-like conditions in much of the US this past week put into perspective somewhat the ''cold spell'' Thailand experienced over the festive season. When it gets cold in the US, it really gets cold.
