» If Clubhouse isn't enough to make Samsung fanboys considering abandoning Android for iOS, a new set of emojis may. It has been recently reported that iPhone users can look forwards to 217 new emojis that they can use to expand their emojinication (emoji + communication) with. These new ideogrammatic icons include a revamped version of the syringe icon to be bloodless to go with 2021 as the year of Covid-19 vaccination, obvi. The normal black headphone icon will turn white and look like Apple AirPods Max. Three new smileys. Two new hearts. A bunch of bearded men/women in different skin tones (Because why not?). And multiple pairs of couples with a mix of skin tones for interracial lovebirds.

» One side effect of the Covid-19 pandemic that you may have overlooked (besides amassing a vast collection of hand sanitisers and exposing govt inefficiency -- kapow!) is more waste, especially plastic. Inevitably, it is exacerbated by our appetite for food delivery while we're WFH during this quasi-lockdown. The first wave saw an increase of plastic waste by 60% in Bangkok due to the higher demand for food delivery as estimated by Thailand Environment Institute in May last year. Thailand Research Development Insitute also claimed that one such order can contain up to seven pieces of plastic waste (so opt-out of utensils when you order please).

» The long-awaited entrance of the new iPhone series to Thai stores has become a trending subject. In addition to the upgraded technology and lavish exterior, one notable contrast is that this series does not come with the customary wall charger and wired earphones. While such omission has reasonably raised eyebrows, especially when there is no trace of any price reduction, Apple justified their action by claiming that the smaller packaging will help them deliver more units at once and, thus, reduce their carbon footprint.

» Here we go again. As if nothing has changed over the past two decades, the government of the day has once again botched and bungled Thailand's trade policy by riding roughshod over civil society groups and the public at large. The unceremonious withdrawal of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership from cabinet deliberations earlier this week was regrettable and unnecessary. Because of adverse geopolitical and geo-economic trends on the horizon, Thailand needs to consider joining the CPTPP. But it has to do so the hard way, with public participation, bargaining and negotiations among domestic interest groups to reach a consensus.

While there are several countries that truly should not be on this committee, Iran is near or at the top.
